\u201cYell Cornell\u201d is a lavish love letter that brings yesteryear\u2019s players\u2014and fans\u2014to colorful life<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It started with a 1950 Cornell-Harvard football game\u2014specifically, with a program for the decades-old contest that Joe Kirschner \u201993 found at a garage sale his senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Kirschner, the booklet\u2014whose cover depicts a young man frantically searching his pockets for his game tickets, as his unamused (Harvard) date looks on\u2014was a window into a vibrant, bygone world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was a lot more formality, pageantry, ceremony\u2014almost a romance about everything,\u201d says Kirschner, himself a dedicated Cornell sports<\/a> fan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The program became the first item in what\u2019s now a vast collection of Big Red athletics memorabilia, some 1,000 items strong. Much of it can be viewed on Kirschner\u2019s website, iyellcornell.com<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The name comes from the \u201cCornell Yell,\u201d a chant that originated at an 1875 regatta that the Big Red won before a crowd of 25,000.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housed and meticulously displayed in Kirschner\u2019s New Jersey home, the collection includes ephemera\u2014tickets, passes, schedules, and receipts\u2014and a dizzying variety of pins, buttons, banners, pennants, ceramics, uniforms, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One octagon-shaped \u201call privilege badge\u201d\u2014its red cord still attached\u2014grants the wearer access to the October 27, 1894 Harvard-Cornell championship “foot-ball” game at New York City\u2019s Manhattan Field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A red felt baseball cap (still vividly carnelian, save for the bright white \u201cC\u201d) sits on a shelf more than 120 years after it perched on the head of Thomas Richard Sanders, a pitcher on the 1899 and 1900 teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A photo postcard of Touchdown\u2014Big Red football\u2019s live bear mascot, purchased from an animal trainer in 1915\u2014sports a handwritten note, postmarked that December: \u201cHe has gone back to Oldtown, Me. to rest after a hard and most successful season. May he sleep in peace and be on the job in 1916.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A family of Big Red fans<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kirschner\u2014a New Jersey native who was a devoted fan of New York sports teams growing up\u2014majored in agricultural economics in CALS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(So did his wife, ThuTrang Du \u201993, now an associate director at Weill Cornell Medicine; the couple and their two daughters often attend Big Red hockey games, especially the annual contest at Madison Square Garden.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, Kirschner went to work at the consulting firm Accenture. Meanwhile, he continued to add to his rapidly growing collection, scouting out Big Red memorabilia as well as items from other Ivy teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirschner\u2014who ultimately plans to donate most or all of his collection to the University Archives\u2014found himself drawn to items from the late 1800s and early 1900s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then, he explains, contests between the country\u2019s elite universities (the term \u201cIvy League\u201d wasn\u2019t created until the 1930s) dominated the athletic scene and were front-page news across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re not just pieces of memorabilia; they really bring you back to a past time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

By the early 2000s, Kirschner had created a website to host images of his collection, as well as to tell the stories behind it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing comes to life by itself,\u201d he stresses. \u201cThey\u2019re not just pieces of memorabilia; they really bring you back to a past time. It\u2019s that connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once word of his collection began to spread, people with unusual or rare items began to seek him out. That\u2019s how he obtained what he described as one of his \u201choly grails\u201d: a complete Cornell baseball uniform dating to 1906. It came into Kirschner\u2019s possession via the granddaughter of its wearer (catcher <\/strong>and centerfielder Edwin Hamilton \u201cHam\u201d Hastings 1907), then in her 70s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJoe’s collection is focused\u2014on athletics\u2014which enables him to collect in a targeted fashion, and build a cohesive selection of items that helps fill a niche in the story of Cornell’s history,\u201d says University Archivist Evan Earle \u201902, MS \u201914. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Compared with generalized collections of Cornelliana, Earle says, focused acquisitions like Kirschner\u2019s \u201ccan build deep groupings of material that have more historic value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To underscore how even a small item exemplifies his passion for vintage Big Red memorabilia, Kirschner points to a ticket from an 1898 Cornell-Penn football game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the amount of effort, the quality, that went into this engraving of a football,\u201d he explains, emphasizing the exquisite detail in the two-color printing\u2014not only of the text and imagery, but also the intricate background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t just slap it on,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s from a time where they really tried to celebrate the event, and all the other things that went into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
