{"id":7973,"date":"2022-05-20T08:53:18","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T13:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=7973"},"modified":"2026-02-10T12:31:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T17:31:16","slug":"university-chorus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/university-chorus\/","title":{"rendered":"The University Chorus Makes Beautiful Music"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Originally known as the Women\u2019s Glee Club, the group will celebrate its centennial at Reunion \u201922<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Beth Saulnier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The title is as revelatory as it is cheeky: \u201cNo Whining, No Flowers.\u201d That\u2019s the name of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cuchorus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell University Chorus<\/a>\u2019s ongoing project, launched in 2003, to commission new works by women composers, based on texts by women writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name pokes gentle fun at two stereotypical subjects of classical pieces for female voices: the tribulations of lost love, and the beauty of nature. Then you send it out into the audience and feel their reaction come back to you. They plan not just concerts, but world tours. (Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Cornelliana Night<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><em>8:30\u20139:45 p.m. Saturday, June 11<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">The Chorus and Glee Club perform at the traditional Reunion event, held this year in Schoellkopf Stadium.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hinrichs, who sings soprano one (the highest vocal part), has performed with the group all four years on the Hill; in fact, she signed up to audition before she even matriculated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was super excited to join the ensemble,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt was so cool, because you were part of this huge tradition; even having just arrived on campus, you had all this nostalgia and school spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chorus gives several on-campus concerts each year, and\u2014in non-COVID times\u2014tours nationally and internationally. It has released several albums, including a CD of Big Red songs and a collection of \u201cNo Whining, No Flowers\u201d compositions. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And when it comes to admitting new members, it\u2019s highly selective: roughly six people audition for each open spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also has an <em>a cappella<\/em> subset, dubbed After Eight. (Its previous subset, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nothingbuttreblecornell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nothing But Treble<\/a>, was established in 1976 and spun off as an independent ensemble in 1990.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Singing Pioneers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Cornell history expert Corey Earle \u201907 observes, the founding of the Women&#8217;s Glee Club in 1920 coincided with a surge in enrollment of female students on the Hill. (In its early decades, the group was also open to faculty and staff, their spouses, and community members.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s very much a pioneering organization, and it has a role in broader music history,\u201d says Earle, himself a Glee Club alum. \u201cIt&#8217;s one of the oldest treble-voice college choirs\u2014and keep in mind, around the turn of the century, coeducation was still controversial; our peer institutions were still not admitting women as undergraduates. Or go on tour? Michael Trogolo &#8217;96. Chorus president her junior year and general manager as a senior, Trogolo vividly recalls seeing the group sing on the Arts Quad during her freshman orientation, when members not only performed but taught traditional Big Red songs to the newly minted Cornellians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m one of those people who tends to say I majored in chorus; so much of my life revolved around Sage Chapel, Lincoln Hall, and all the performance spaces,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you come to campus with a love of music, and you find a community that not only also loves it but wants to engage with it in the same ways\u2014intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially\u2014it really becomes a family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When you come to campus with a love of music, and you find a community that not only also loves it but wants to engage with it in the same ways, it really becomes a family.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Kathy Heppner Trogolo &#8217;95<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While many choral alumni have continued to nurture their passion for music by singing with community groups or church choirs, some have gone on to professional careers.
