It\u2019s the pomology industry\u2019s version of the Oscar for Best Picture: the Apple Grower of the Year award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, that major horticultural honor was bestowed on Bobby Brown \u201906, whose family farm in Western New York produces some 400,000 bushels of the fruit annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I am most proud of in my career is being able to watch our business grow, whether it\u2019s in acres, quality, people, or investment,\u201d says the CALS alum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of pride, because it\u2019s hard to grow and be successful at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Orchard Dale Fruit Company<\/a> in Waterport\u2014located halfway between Rochester and Niagara Falls\u2014Brown and his family grow around 15 apple varieties on 400 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fruit is shipped nationwide to retailers including Walmart, Costco, Wegmans, Sprouts, and Whole Foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the nearly two decades that Brown has helped run the operation, it has doubled its apple acreage and production while introducing new technology, including cameras and drones that assist in managing the crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a lot of pride, because it\u2019s hard to grow and be successful at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

His work growing apples and contributing to the industry beyond his own orchards earned him the award, presented annually by American Fruit Grower<\/em> and Western Fruit Grower<\/em> magazines based on nominations by fellow farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown\u2019s apple roots\u2014and his Big Red ties\u2014run deep. His family has farmed the land that\u2019s now Orchard Dale for more than 200 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grew up working alongside his late father, Robert Brown II \u201977<\/a>\u2014Bobby\u2019s full name is Robert Brown III\u2014and uncle Eric Brown \u201985. (Bobby\u2019s sister, Sarah Brown \u201909, is also an alum, as is Eric’s son, Harrison Brown \u201923.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric remains his partner in the operation, while Bobby\u2019s wife, Beth Brown (daughter of Mark Henry \u201976 and Bette Wightman Henry \u201977), serves as business manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bobby is also a part owner of the packing house\u2014Lake Ontario Fruit<\/a>, run by longtime friend Scott Henning \u201906\u2014where apples from Orchard Dale and other Western New York growers are prepared for shipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With so many relatives, coworkers, and fellow Cornellians woven into the orchard and its success, Brown doesn\u2019t view the award as an individual accomplishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy first thought,\u201d he says, \u201cwas, \u2018How can I recognize the people who have helped me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the most influential: his dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By high school, Brown knew he was interested in agriculture but found himself increasingly drawn to its business side. He majored in applied economics and management in CALS before returning to Orchard Dale after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For nearly two decades, he worked alongside his father and uncle to grow the family business. His dad, who passed away in 2025, continues to shape how Brown approaches the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe had a distinct vision on fruit quality,\u201d Brown says. \u201cHe was a big advocate for doing the right thing\u2014producing something that you can be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the 13 farmers who nominated Brown for Apple Grower of the Year, several pointed to his willingness to share ideas with other growers, embrace new technology, and support the broader community, including serving for more than a decade on the New York Apple Association board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[My dad] had a distinct vision on fruit quality. He was a big advocate for doing the right thing\u2014producing something that you can be proud of.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything I engage with on Bobby\u2019s farm is in pristine condition due to the overall concern and organization he has for running his business,\u201d assistant professor of entomology Monique Rivera said in an article announcing<\/a> Brown\u2019s win. \u201cBobby is an exemplary grower, and anyone who works with him can attest to his fairness and diligence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That attention to detail is especially important in a business that, Brown notes, is far more intricate than many consumers may imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After winter planning and pruning, he explains, growers monitor trees as they bud, flower, and begin to produce fruit. A single tree may initially have around 1,000 small fruitlets, which are thinned to roughly 100 so the remaining apples can develop properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determining when to harvest requires its own careful planning\u2014balancing when the fruit have developed the right amount of sugar and flavor with how well they\u2019ll withstand storage. Once it\u2019s time to pick, Orchard Dale needs scores of workers to harvest the crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhenever we give a farm tour, people say they didn\u2019t know apple growing was that complex,\u201d Brown says. \u201cIt might seem like there\u2019s three steps to produce an apple, but there\u2019s probably 100.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
