Growing up in Afghanistan, Mursal Rahim, MPA \u201925<\/a>, saw the blue UNICEF logo everywhere\u2014from her notebooks and pencils to the tent where she attended class with other girls. More than two decades later, she was thrilled to see a variant of that logo somewhere else: beside her own photograph on a badge at the United Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim was a grad student on the Hill when she landed a summer internship with the U.N. in NYC, fulfilling a goal she had carried with her since arriving in the U.S. after fleeing her home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI became very emotional because I saw \u2018Mursal from Afghanistan,\u2019\u201d Rahim says, recalling how it felt to view her own image on an official U.N. credential. \u201cI thought, \u2018Look how far she has come.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim\u2019s determination to get an education started early. At five, her older sister helped her pretend she was seven so she could begin school\u2014until her baby teeth gave her away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming of age in an era when women had unprecedented educational freedom due to the American occupation of her country, she earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in law from Salam University in Kunduz and was preparing for a career advocating for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim\u2019s determination to get an education started early. At five, her older sister helped her pretend she was seven so she could begin school\u2014until her baby teeth gave her away.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Then, in August 2021, that promising future abruptly vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan and the Taliban retook control, Rahim fled with her family; her older brother had worked as a reporter for the New York Times<\/em>, which helped evacuate more than 100 of its local employees and their relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since returning to power, the Taliban has barred girls from education beyond the sixth grade and severely limited women\u2019s ability to work and participate in public life. The U.N. has called Afghanistan under Taliban rule the world\u2019s most repressive country for women and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim\u2019s journey from Afghanistan to the U.S.\u2014and eventually to Cornell\u2014was recently chronicled in The Last Free Women<\/em><\/a>: A Daring Escape from Afghanistan and Coming of Age in America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book was written by Rebecca Blumenstein, a former Times<\/em> editor who helped coordinate the employees\u2019 evacuation and resettlement, and Diana Kapp, a journalist who has reported from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<\/div>

It follows Rahim and three other young Afghan women from the same evacuation group over the course of five years, as they build new lives in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was born in war, I was raised in war, and now I leave my country in war,\u201d the authors quote Rahim as saying shortly after coming to the U.S. \u201cOur body is safe, but our soul is not. Our soul is still in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim arrived in Houston speaking little English and spent her first months learning the language. A year later, she and her sister moved to Pittsburg to study English at Chatham University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a chapter titled \u201cCornell Visions,\u201d Rahim visits the Hill and tours the Brooks School<\/a>\u2019s master of public administration program. Though she was unfamiliar with the Big Red before the visit, she left with a new goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMursal had never heard of the Ivy League,\u201d the authors write, \u201cbut now she intended to get herself there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim matriculated in fall 2023, concentrating her graduate studies on human rights and social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was supported by Global Cornell\u2019s Scholars Under Threat<\/a> initiative, which helps international students whose education or careers have been disrupted by peril in their home countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t only study at Cornell; I grew up there, as a human and as a woman,\u201d Rahim says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI became someone who would think broader, who would think beyond the bubble that I had before. To not be scared to try new stuff, to be braver, to speak out in class about my ideas, to not be ashamed of who I am and what my background is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rahim earned her MPA in May 2025, less than four years after leaving Afghanistan. She recently reflected on that moment in a New York Times<\/em> op-ed<\/a> headlined \u201cWhat America Owes to Afghan Women,\u201d in which she describes the complicated memory of celebrating her achievement while thinking of those she\u2019d left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I teetered across the stage in high heels, the sad, hopeless faces of my girlfriends who never made it out of Afghanistan flashed through my mind,\u201d she writes. \u201cThis is the whiplash I live with now\u2014highs of freedom and newfound opportunity, punctured by lows of intense guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, Rahim moved to Virginia to be closer to her family and work as a case manager for Catholic Charities, helping immigrants and refugees. With the office closing, she\u2019s searching for her next position in policy or legal work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she considers what comes next, she\u2019s fielding media attention from her appearance in The Last Free Women<\/em>\u2014a story Rahim says she initially wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI realized I want people reading this,\u201d Rahim says. \u201cMy mission is to show people that we are all the same; we have the same ambitions. As refugees, as migrants, as women, we were limited, because we didn\u2019t have the same resources back in Afghanistan. We could do great when we came to a country that gave us resources, gave us a chance, and gave us wings.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
