But as reporter Jenn Abelson \u201900 and colleagues at the <em>Washington Post<\/em> reveal in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/interactive\/2022\/no-knock-warrants-judges\/?itid=ap_nicoledungca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investigative project and podcast series<\/a>, they have sometimes been abused.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When issued on shoddy or even false pretenses, the warrants\u2014which disproportionally impact people of color and the economically disadvantaged\u2014can drive unjust arrests, prosecutions, and seizures of property, the <em>Post<\/em> series reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as Taylor\u2019s death underscores, the stakes can be even higher: officers may enter with terrifying force in the middle of the night, prompting scared and disoriented residents to reach for their own weapons in self-defense\u2014and the police to respond with gunfire. she spent a decade at the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> before joining its legendary Spotlight team in 2013. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The team became a household name thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1895587\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eponymous 2015 movie<\/a> that dramatized its coverage of the Catholic Church\u2019s pedophilia scandal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We really wanted to understand: how often are no-knock warrants involved in fatalities, and what are the consequences?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Abelson\u2019s investigative work at the <em>Globe<\/em> included a series on dangerously shoddy housing for college students that was a Pulitzer finalist for public service reporting; a piece on surgeons \u201cdouble-booking\u201d patients in the OR was a finalist for a Scripps Howard Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, she co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35297089-i-have-the-right-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>I Have the Right To: A High School Survivor&#8217;s Story of Sexual Assault, Justice, and Hope<\/em><\/a>, a memoir narrated in the first-person by Chessy Prout, a young woman who had recently gone public as the victim in a high-profile assault case at a New England boarding school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the <em>Post<\/em> since 2019, Abelson has worked on a series on the U.S. opioid epidemic that was a Pulitzer public service finalist;
