Although he played football for the Big Red, Jack Corrigan \u201974 has been doing baseball play-by-play for more than four decades<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long before Jack Corrigan \u201974 was announcing Major League Baseball games from the broadcast booth, he was calling Wiffle ball games with the neighborhood kids on a cul-de-sac outside his family home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The street on Cleveland\u2019s west side doubled as a baseball field, with manhole covers and electrical boxes serving as makeshift bases and kids taking turns doing play-by-play whenever their side came up to bat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, as a 10-year-old Corrigan rounded the bases after a home run, he blurted out a triumphant call. Borrowing the name of a player from the city\u2019s MLB team (then known as the Indians), he declared: \u201cIt\u2019s touch-\u2019em-all time for Woody Held!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The line stuck. Soon, the teenage Corrigan and a friend were bringing a tape recorder to Indians games, sneaking into seats high above home plate and taking turns calling the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, as a 10-year-old Corrigan rounded the bases after a home run, he blurted out a triumphant call: \u201cIt\u2019s touch-\u2019em-all time!”<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And some two decades later, Corrigan walked into that same stadium with a media credential around his neck\u2014as one of the team\u2019s broadcasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI could go into the clubhouse, into the dugout, out on the field for batting practice, and then go up to the booth, and nobody would stop me because I was allowed to be there,\u201d Corrigan recalls of his first game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was almost surreal. It\u2019s that pinch-yourself moment. Then it was time to get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That dream gig has continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in his 41st year calling MLB games, Corrigan still uses the home run call from that childhood Wiffle ball game: \u201cIt\u2019s touch-\u2019em-all time!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Corrigan is the radio voice<\/a> of the Colorado Rockies, a role he has held since 2003 after spending 17 seasons broadcasting for his hometown team (now known as the Guardians).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his career, he has called thousands of games, including three World Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love the games I\u2019ve covered, and I love being a part of the listeners\u2019 lives, even in this small way,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s been a joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corrigan describes himself as a \u201cslower-paced storyteller,\u201d leaving space for listeners to hear the sounds of the stadium as he weaves in stories about players, baseball history, and his own experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love the games I\u2019ve covered, and I love being a part of the listeners\u2019 lives, even in this small way. It\u2019s been a joy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to be able to speak well,\u201d he observes, \u201cbut if you don\u2019t have anything to say, then you kind of defeat the purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baseball gives him plenty of material. With more than a century of the sport from which to draw, Corrigan says, he can find stories in a game from the day before, one that was played generations ago, and everything in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(He has also penned two novels: Warning Track<\/em>, which follows an aging MLB player trying to stay in the majors amid performance-enhancing drugs scandals, and Night of Destiny<\/em>, about WWII soldiers on a troop ship en route to the Battle of the Bulge.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before Corrigan made a career out of announcing baseball, he headed to the Hill focused on a different sport: football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wide receiver for the Big Red, Corrigan majored in history in Arts & Sciences and envisioned a future that would take him from the NFL\u2019s fields to, after retirement, its broadcast booths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as he notes with a laugh: \u201cI did get to go to the Dallas Cowboys rookie camp\u2014and coach Tom Landry decided I should start broadcasting immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>

Corrigan went on to earn a master\u2019s in communication from Kent State before landing jobs covering football, basketball, and baseball at Youngstown State and the University of Richmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later returned to his hometown, where he called NBA and MLB games while also covering college sports for ESPN and regional networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corrigan describes himself as a \u201cslower-paced storyteller,\u201d leaving space for listeners to hear the sounds of the stadium as he weaves in stories about players, baseball history, and his own experiences.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In 2003, he joined the Rockies as a radio broadcaster after having spent most of his career in baseball on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am a conduit for people to enjoy the game they love,\u201d Corrigan says, \u201cand for them to know that I love it just as much\u2014or maybe even more\u2014than they do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
