This Alum Plays a Different Tune"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Also a Juilliard grad, Daniel Anastasio \u201911 shows his tens of thousands of social media followers why the genre is for everyone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Sit quietly in a large, ornate recital hall and don\u2019t clap between movements. Know your Beethoven from your Bach\u2014and be sure to brush up on your Italian, French, and German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These types of high-minded mandates are why many people find classical music intimidating, says <a href=\"https:\/\/danielanastasio.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Anastasio \u201911<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a professional pianist with a doctorate in musical arts, Anastasio might seem like just the kind of person who could make the genre feel even more unwelcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he has made it his mission to do the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through social media videos and live performances around the country, Anastasio breaks down classical music for new and casual listeners\u2014explaining what they\u2019re hearing, why it sounds the way it does, and what makes centuries-old compositions worth listening to today.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople more than anything just need to be educated\u2014not in a didactic way, not being talked down to,\u201d says Anastasio, who has upwards of 81,000 followers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/daniel_anastasio_piano\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Instagram<\/a> and more than 35,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@danielanastasio2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on TikTok<\/a>, plus nearly 24,000 subscribers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@danielanastasiopiano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust a little explanation and a little playing will show how immediately accessible and moving this music can be for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anastasio\u2019s social media efforts began in earnest in June 2025, when he uploaded a video to Instagram every day for a week showcasing some of his favorite techniques\u2014for example, laying a pearl necklace over piano strings to create a sound explanation, breaking down classical pieces and bringing attention to the details that shape how the music sounds and feels, all within a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he observes in one video, while softly playing Debussy\u2019s famed \u201cClair de Lune\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to underestimate this piece because we could easily just think of this as a romantic piece, a moonlit scene with two lovers. But if we think of Paul Verlaine\u2019s poem by the same name that inspired this piece, then we might think of a dancer who is celebrating all of life, all of its joys, but also all of its sorrows and mysteries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a little explanation and a little playing will show how immediately accessible and moving this music can be for anyone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he continues playing, Anastasio draws attention to the arrival of a low note beneath the delicate, higher notes of the melody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere\u2019s our first bass note, finally,\u201d he says, striking the key. \u201cThat\u2019s Debussy bringing us back down to Earth after we\u2019ve been in the clouds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to his social media work, Anastasio co-hosts the podcast <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/033lKngUKatZ9e0ejJ50xj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel and Isabel Save Classical Music<\/a><\/em> with a Juilliard-trained violist turned stand-up comedian. He talks audiences through the music as he plays and ends each show with a question-and-answer session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he observes of the classical world: \u201cThere\u2019s a whole history that is silly to just expect the average person to know about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p>Anastasio also takes his approach on the road, traveling around the country for events that combine performance with commentary and demonstrations.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based in San Antonio, TX, Anastasio is artistic director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agarita.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agarita<\/a>, a chamber music group that stages free community concerts and collaborates with dancers, poets, fashion designers, and other artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In NYC, he performs with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unheard-ofensemble.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unheard-of<\/a>, a contemporary music ensemble that commissions young composers and premieres new works.
