In a new memoir, TV writer and stand-up performer Alison Leiby \u201906 tackles comedy, tragedy, and everything in between<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter I realized I didn\u2019t want kids, I would remind [my mother] from time to time when it felt relevant, like in the middle of a long phone call or milling around the Nordstrom shoe department,\u201d Alison Leiby \u201906<\/a> recalls in her new memoir. \u201cYou know, the prime times to drop on your parents that they\u2019ll never become grandparents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That anecdote\u2014a serious topic dispatched with the comedian\u2019s signature wry humor\u2014offers a taste of the tone of Leiby\u2019s book, I\u2019m a Lot<\/em><\/a>: Surviving Myself and All the People I’ve Been.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn writing it, I learned a lot about my relationship to who I am,\u201d says the Arts & Sciences alum. \u201cIt\u2019s a love letter to all the terrible aspects of my personality. You\u2019re allowed to not be perfect or good. You can give yourself a little bit more grace. Yeah, I was a mess in my twenties, but that\u2019s fine; it\u2019s what your twenties are for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the collection of 14 essays\u2014which Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em> calls a \u201claugh-out-loud treatise on what it truly means to embrace every part of yourself\u201d\u2014Leiby contemplates such issues as coping with chronic pain and opting for an abortion, along with more lighthearted topics, like playing sports, being a cat mom, and obsessing over the \u201cReal Housewives\u201d shows.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cFor creative and ambitious women, Alison Leiby\u2019s lifelong Diet Coke-fueled struggle to separate her work from her worth will be illuminating,\u201d says Booklist<\/em>, \u201cwhile also emphasizing how ridiculous it is that such a battle exists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A central theme of Leiby\u2019s memoir is her earlier-in-life struggles to form an identity amid changing interests and circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re allowed to not be perfect or good. You can give yourself a little bit more grace. Yeah, I was a mess in my twenties, but that\u2019s fine; it\u2019s what your twenties are for.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In her teens, Leiby went from avid competitive swimmer to Big Red rowing recruit to someone who could barely walk without pain due to spinal degeneration, and who faced life-threatening complications after back surgery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former English major also cycled through potential careers\u2014from aspiring academic to jobs in publishing and museum PR\u2014before finding her calling in comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she writes: \u201cI think that\u2019s what we all feel pressured to do on some level: define ourselves again and again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leiby\u2019s memoir is the latest project in a career that has taken her from open mic nights in the backrooms of NYC bars to TV writers\u2019 rooms to performing Off-Broadway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wrote for a spinoff of Hulu\u2019s \u201cTriumph the Insult Comic Dog\u201d devoted to the 2016 presidential election before moving to Comedy Central, where she worked on the Trump Administration spoof \u201cThe President Show\u201d and on \u201cThe Opposition with Jordan Klepper,\u201d a news satire starring a former \u201cDaily Show\u201d correspondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was getting kind of wrung out in late night,\u201d she recalls. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew I could write some really edgy, interesting stuff about what\u2019s happening to women, but they didn\u2019t want that. I was exhausted by that and knew I had to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leiby made the shift to series television, working on two seasons of \u201cThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,\u201d Amazon Prime\u2019s critically acclaimed dramedy about a 1960s Manhattanite who discovers a talent for stand-up after her marriage dissolves. She later penned an episode of the Amy Schumer show \u201cLife & Beth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For creative and ambitious women, Alison Leiby\u2019s lifelong Diet Coke-fueled struggle to separate her work from her worth will be illuminating while also emphasizing how ridiculous it is that such a battle exists.<\/p>\nBooklist<\/strong><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After years of penning jokes for other performers, Leiby wrote and starred in a one-woman stand-up show that eventually had an Off-Broadway run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titled Oh God: A Show About Abortion,<\/em> it was inspired by her own choice to terminate a pregnancy\u2014and finding the experience to be surprisingly mundane, which made her wonder why stories like hers were rarely represented in popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust a few weeks earlier I\u2019d had two root canals and that experience was harder in every conceivable way: physically, emotionally, financially,\u201d she writes in her memoir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cA lifetime of expecting this to be tragic and traumatic and overwhelming was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show launched as abortion rights were being upended, with the Supreme Court ultimately overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade<\/em> decision that had legalized the procedure for half a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeiby doesn\u2019t just anticipate your expectations. She subverts them,\u201d the New York Times <\/em>said, going on to call Oh God<\/em> a \u201cdeftly funny, jarringly understated show [that] doesn\u2019t respond to the news so much as clarify it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attention surrounding the show helped Leiby shape her memoir, which she\u2019d been pondering for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, in addition to promoting the book, she\u2019s continuing to do stand-up and produce her podcast, Ruined with Alison Leiby and Halle Kiefer<\/em><\/a>, in which she and a co-host humorously dissect (and spoil the endings of) horror movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComedy is a really good way to start a conversation about something that people don\u2019t want to talk about,\u201d Leiby observes. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s the power of comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
