{"id":76344,"date":"2026-09-08T05:29:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T09:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=76344"},"modified":"2026-09-03T13:30:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T17:30:16","slug":"leiby-comedian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/leiby-comedian\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It\u2019s a Love Letter to All the Terrible Aspects of My Personality\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a new memoir, TV writer and stand-up performer Alison Leiby \u201906 tackles comedy, tragedy, and everything in between<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter I realized I didn\u2019t want kids, I would remind [my mother] from time to time when it felt relevant, like in the middle of a long phone call or milling around the Nordstrom shoe department,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alisonleiby\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alison Leiby \u201906<\/a> recalls in her new memoir. \u201cYou know, the prime times to drop on your parents that they\u2019ll never become grandparents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That anecdote\u2014a serious topic dispatched with the comedian\u2019s signature wry humor\u2014offers a taste of the tone of Leiby\u2019s book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/746320\/im-a-lot-by-alison-leiby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>I\u2019m a Lot<\/em><\/a><em>: Surviving Myself and All the People I&#8217;ve Been.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn writing it, I learned a lot about my relationship to who I am,\u201d says the Arts &amp; Sciences alum. \u201cIt\u2019s a love letter to all the terrible aspects of my personality. You\u2019re allowed to not be perfect or good. You can give yourself a little bit more grace. You can give yourself a little bit more grace. I was exhausted by that and knew I had to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leiby made the shift to series television, working on two seasons of \u201cThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,\u201d Amazon Prime\u2019s critically acclaimed dramedy about a 1960s Manhattanite who discovers a talent for stand-up after her marriage dissolves. She later penned an episode of the Amy Schumer show \u201cLife &amp; Beth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(She has twice shared Writers Guild of America award nominations, for \u201cThe President Show\u201d and \u201cMrs. Maisel.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For creative and ambitious women, Alison Leiby\u2019s lifelong Diet Coke-fueled struggle to separate her work from her worth will be illuminating while also emphasizing how ridiculous it is that such a battle exists.<\/p>\n<cite><em><strong>Booklist<\/strong><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years of penning jokes for other performers, Leiby wrote and starred in a one-woman stand-up show that eventually had an Off-Broadway run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Titled <em>Oh God: A Show About Abortion,<\/em> it was inspired by her own choice to terminate a pregnancy\u2014and finding the experience to be surprisingly mundane, which made her wonder why stories like hers were rarely represented in popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust a few weeks earlier I\u2019d had two root canals and that experience was harder in every conceivable way: physically, emotionally, financially,\u201d she writes in her memoir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lifetime of expecting this to be tragic and traumatic and overwhelming was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show launched as abortion rights were being upended, with the Supreme Court ultimately overturning the landmark <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> decision that had legalized the procedure for half a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeiby doesn\u2019t just anticipate your expectations.
