Having grown up working in his family\u2019s small hotels, Patrick Nichols \u201908 never expected to be helming a property in \u2018Sin City\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a newly graduated Hotelie, Patrick Nichols \u201908 went westward for his first post-Cornell job: financial analyst at Las Vegas\u2019s famed Venetian Resort<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019d spend about a year there before heading to his next gig\u2014on the other side of the globe, in Singapore\u2014little suspecting that lady luck would someday bring him back not just to the Venetian, but to its top job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Nichols is president and CEO<\/a> of the Italian-themed, all-suite luxury resort, located at what he calls the \u201cbustling epicenter of the Strip.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>

Not only is the Venetian one of the vacation mecca\u2019s most iconic properties, it\u2019s the biggest in North America in terms of guest rooms (and number two in the world, behind one in Malaysia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe scale is the first thing you notice; it\u2019s massive\u201468 acres, 19 million square feet, more than 7,100 suites,\u201d Nichols says. \u201cUnlike some of the newer resorts in town, we are themed, and you can see that everywhere in the public spaces. I think that creates a sense of place, which harkens back to the golden days of Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opened in 1999, the resort was an early leader in the local convention industry, predating the city\u2019s own facility; it remains the nation\u2019s largest privately owned convention center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resort also boasts restaurants by celebrity chefs like Thomas Keller and Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s, two casinos, and a multitude of entertainment options, including an immersive performance space, the Sphere, that\u2019s one of the city\u2019s newer landmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the original Venetian\u2014which, Nichols explains, is meant to have the feel of its namesake\u2019s lively streets and canals\u2014the resort now includes another hotel, the Palazzo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like Milan,\u201d he says, \u201cmore sophisticated, a little more design oriented, less themed\u2014a little quieter, but not quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Nichols notes, while in some ways Vegas\u2019s reputation as \u201cSin City\u201d is alive and well\u2014you can still smoke indoors (other than in eateries), and sipping an adult beverage on the sidewalk is perfectly legal\u2014in recent decades it has become a destination for vacationing families and business travelers alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s certainly no normal day,\u201d he says of his job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are probably 30,000\u201340,000 people here at any given time; it\u2019s like a little city, with the same infrastructure. Whether it\u2019s facilities issues, burst pipes, fires, medical emergencies\u2014things invariably happen. I\u2019ll come into work with an agenda of what I want to accomplish, and someone will pop into my office in the morning and say \u2018Hey, do you have a second?\u2019 and my day is completely derailed. And I love that; there\u2019s always a new and unexpected challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Nichols, hotel operations are a family business: his parents ran small properties in Minnesota\u2019s Mississippi River Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really grew up in the industry,\u201d he says. \u201cMy summer jobs, well before high school, were working for my parents. Front desk, housekeeping, landscaping, painting, wiring wi-fi networks, changing pool filters\u2014you name it, I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Hill, he was a member of the Big Red sailing team and served as president of his fraternity, Theta Delta Chi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps surprisingly given his background, he was aiming for a career in finance rather than hospitality when the economic downturn limited those prospects\u2014serendipitously, as it turned out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My summer jobs, well before high school, were working for my parents. Front desk, housekeeping, landscaping, painting, wiring wi-fi networks, changing pool filters\u2014you name it, I did it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt took me like 60 days to realize, \u2018This is a ton of fun, and this is an industry I want to be in forever,\u2019\u201d he recalls. \u201cI thought I\u2019d be in Vegas for a year or two. And like most people who move to Vegas for \u2018one or two years,\u2019 it turned out to be a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending a year in Singapore launching the luxury Marina Bay Sands hotel, Nichols returned to Vegas to become director of strategic planning at the Cosmopolitan<\/a>, which hadn\u2019t yet opened\u2014and had been taken over by Deutsche Bank after its developer defaulted on a billion-dollar loan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stayed there for more than a decade, helping steer it to success despite skepticism about its concept. (Among other things, he explains, the resort is on a relatively tiny, eight-acre footprint, so its layout is heavily vertical, with restaurants on the third floor rather than on the traditional casino perimeter.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nichols eventually rose to general manager and chief strategy officer before moving to the Venetian, where he heads an operation with 9,000 staff and has overseen a $1.5 billion investment that he calls the largest renovation of any hotel in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m a big believer in a simple philosophy called \u2018management by walking around,\u2019\u201d he observes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI make an effort to walk around the resort for at least an hour every day, giving our guests and team members an opportunity to tell me what they feel. Those insights are some of the most valuable. Having a drink or dinner with guests is a great way to understand what people actually think about your business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
