Alison Leiby \u201906<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this hilarious and unforgettable collection of essays<\/a>, TV writer and comedian Alison Leiby delivers a laugh-out-loud treatise on what it truly means to embrace every part of yourself,\u201d says Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether she\u2019s reflecting on the back-surgery complications that nearly left her dead at 19 years old or the peculiarities of being an only child, Leiby paints a candid, kaleidoscopic portrait of herself as a woman who refuses to conform to any one label.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comprising 14 personal essays, Leiby\u2019s book is subtitled Surviving Myself and All the People I\u2019ve Been.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>

In it, the humorist<\/a> who has been dubbed a \u201cJewish Millennial David Sedaris\u201d contemplates serious topics like coping with chronic pain and opting for an abortion\u2014along with much more lighthearted ones such as being a cat mom and obsessing over the \u201cReal Housewives\u201d shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor creative and ambitious women, Alison Leiby\u2019s lifelong Diet Coke-fueled struggle to separate her work from her worth will be illuminating,\u201d says Booklist<\/em>, \u201cwhile also emphasizing how ridiculous it is that such a battle exists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Guide to Mao\u2019s China<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gavin Healy \u201996<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former Asian studies major in Arts & Sciences, Healy is a lecturer<\/a> in the history department at Columbia, where he earned his doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His nonfiction work<\/a>, published by Cornell University Press, is an academic book accessible to educated lay readers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subtitled Showing the Nation to Foreign Guests<\/em>, it explores China\u2019s state tourism bureaucracy during the era of Mao Zedong (1949\u201376).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe People\u2019s Republic crafted its national narrative through tightly managed tours,\u201d says the publisher, \u201cand foreign visitors were led through model communes and factories by officials, guides, and service workers still negotiating what tourism meant within a socialist state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healy\u2019s research draws on government archives, firsthand reports from tourists, ephemera, and more, as it examines how tourism staff helped shape how foreigners (including those from other socialist countries) viewed the Chinese system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSocialist China has often been depicted\u2014both in accounts for a general readership and in specialized scholarship\u2014as isolated behind a \u2018bamboo curtain\u2019 that was lifted only after the death of Mao and the introduction of Deng Xiaoping\u2019s policies of \u2018reform and opening,\u2019\u201d Healy writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYet, what many of these accounts have in common is that they take \u2018the world\u2019 as synonymous with the capitalist West.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature\u2019s Remarkable Partners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leslie Bulion \u201979<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aimed at readers aged eight to 12, this illustrated book of verse and prose<\/a> celebrates cooperative relationships between disparate types of animals around the globe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They include that of the ocean sunfish and the Laysan albatross: the fish offers a food source for the bird, which cleans harmful parasites off its body.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Another spread spotlights the alligator\u2019s mutuality with long-legged wading birds like storks and egrets: \u201cGator, dear, \/ when I nest near \/ your jaws and sharped-tooth sneer \/ opossums and racoons steer clear, \/ while my growing chicks and I need not fear.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Arts & Sciences alum, Bulion<\/a> also holds graduate degrees in oceanography and social work. She has previously penned numerous children\u2019s books melding science and poetry including Gal\u00e1pagos: Islands of Change<\/em>; Hey There, Stink Bug!<\/em>; and Spi-ku: A Clutter of Short Verse on Eight Legs<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe animal interplay is fascinating, couched in imaginatively crafted, often slyly funny verse,\u201d Kirkus<\/em> says of her latest, calling the volume \u201cclever, visually appealing, and thought-provoking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are They Dead Yet?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sam Roberts \u201968<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roberts is a veteran journalist<\/a> who has spent decades at the New York Times<\/em>\u2014most recently on its obituaries desk, where he has covered upwards of 1,600 notable deaths. His nonfiction book<\/a> is a memoir of his beat, exploring (in the words of the subtitle) the \u201cart of the obit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Booklist<\/em> calls it \u201clively, entertaining, deeply perceptive, and occasionally very funny\u201d and \u201cone of those books that gives us a new appreciation and greater understanding of something we thought we already knew\u201d; Kirkus<\/em> lauds it as a \u201cbrisk, witty look at writing about the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Published by Bloomsbury, the volume not only takes readers behind the scenes of how the nation\u2019s \u201cpaper of record\u201d decides whom to cover out of the roughly 150,000 humans who pass away on an average day, but parses some of the obits bearing Roberts\u2019s byline and traces the history of the obituary as a journalistic form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven when the reporting leans impersonal and crafting the prose is solitary and fleeting, obituary writing is a collaborative process,\u201d Roberts observes<\/a>. \u201cYou really can\u2019t write an obituary without its costing someone else their life. The obit, online especially, becomes a memorial that is universal, accessible, and eternal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Revolutionary Life and Marriage of Lucy Knox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Donna Tesiero \u201976<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesiero\u2019s latest biography<\/a> of a historic woman in early America focuses on Lucy Flucker Knox, who defied her wealthy royalist family and married a bookseller loyal to the Colonies; he\u2019d go on to become a Revolutionary War hero, a close confidant of George Washington, and the new nation\u2019s first Secretary of War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLucy Knox\u2019s insistence on \u2018equal command\u2019 in her marriage to Henry Knox made stronger a relationship that weathered danger, tragedy, loss of physical beauty, and political and financial distress,\u201d Tesiero writes in the intro. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the crucible of war and the birth of a nation, Lucy Knox would be a harbinger of women to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former government major in Arts & Sciences, Tesiero also holds a JD and two master\u2019s degrees. Her previous historical works include Six Nations Diplomat: Molly Brant and the American Revolution<\/em> and A Revolutionary Woman: Elizabeth Freeman and the Abolition of Slavery in the North<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skirmishes with Patriotism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tad Tuleja, MA \u201968<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSixty years ago, as a young man in a nation at war, I faced a choice,\u201d the graduate literature alum writes. \u201cI could participate in a conflict I believed to be unjust, or I could deny the federal government the use of my services and try to escape its net. In this predicament I was not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuleja\u2019s memoir<\/a> chronicles not only his personal experiences, but the wider phenomenon of draft-age men during the Vietnam War era who avoided enlistment in various ways and for different reasons\u2014a population of millions that he calls a forgotten majority.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTracing his own journey from a flag-waving Boy Scout to a disillusioned humanist wrestling with the consequences of saying \u2018no\u2019 to military service, he explores the complex pressures of family, expectations about masculine duty, and the fevered nationalism that continues to grip the United States today,\u201d states the publisher, University of Kentucky Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not a tale of heroism or protest but a candid reckoning with moral ambiguity and the cost of a life-altering decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuleja\u2019s many previous publications<\/a> include fiction, ghostwritten memoirs, nonfiction, and academic writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
