{"id":7451,"date":"2022-04-26T06:55:36","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T11:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=7451"},"modified":"2022-05-10T07:01:32","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T12:01:32","slug":"statues-women-stem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/statues-women-stem\/","title":{"rendered":"3D-Printed Statues Honor Women in STEM\u2014Including Seven Cornellians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size rkv-gutter-bottom-triple\">In March, a Smithsonian exhibit of all 120 of the vivid orange artworks made history in the nation\u2019s capital<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Beth Saulnier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">It was billed as the largest collection ever assembled of statues depicting women: 120 bright orange likenesses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/releases\/smithsonian-launches-new-womens-futures-month-national-mall-debut-120-statues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">displayed on the National Mall<\/a> in Washington, D.C., in early March. Created through full-body scanning and 3D printing, the artworks depict real people\u2014including seven Cornellians\u2014who are making impressive contributions in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition at the Smithsonian, which kicked off Women\u2019s History Month, was the culmination of a years-long effort\u2014complicated by the pandemic\u2014to inspire and inform by highlighting the achievements of students and professionals in these historically male-dominated disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese striking 3D-printed figures of remarkable women in STEM careers help us celebrate the incredible impact women continue to make on vital scientific endeavors,\u201d Lonnie Bunch, secretary of the Smithsonian, said in a statement. \u201cThis exhibition highlights how a more diverse, more inclusive workforce will strengthen our shared future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Titled \u201c#IfThenSheCan\u2013The Exhibit,\u201d the display\u2014which included QR codes linking to bios of each statue\u2019s subject\u2014was part of an ongoing project by Dallas-based Lyda Hill Philanthropies, which in March 2019 founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasinnovates.com\/lyda-hill-philanthropies-commits-25m-to-inspire-the-next-generation-of-women-in-stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IF\/THEN Initiative<\/a>, aimed at encouraging girls to enter STEM fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>This exhibition highlights how a more diverse, more inclusive workforce will strengthen our shared future.<\/p><cite><strong>Lonnie Bunch<\/strong>, secretary of the Smithsonian<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The statues\u2014orange, the organization says, because it\u2019s a \u201cneutral and happy color\u201d\u2014depict women tapped by Lyda Hill Philanthropies and the American Association for the Advancement of Science to serve as role models, dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifthenshecan.org\/ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAAS IF\/THEN Ambassadors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally slated to go on full display in spring 2020, their debut was postponed by the pandemic, though some subsets of the figures were exhibited, including at New York\u2019s Central Park Zoo and Dallas Love Field Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While their tenure in the nation\u2019s capital (which included smaller displays in various spots throughout the month) has ended and the statues are currently in storage, director Margaret Black says Lyda Hill Philanthropies have \u201creceived an outpouring of interest for hosting statues at various venues\u201d\u2014and that future pop-up exhibits may be in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Here&#8217;s a look at the seven Cornellians in \u201c#IfThenSheCan\u201d: four alumnae, one current student, and two academics who were postdocs on the Hill when they were chosen as STEM ambassadors and scanned for their statues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 Florida, Gainesville\u2014which last fall showcased her unorthodox hobby of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2021\/10\/making-the-invisible-adorable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crocheting models of microbes<\/a>, a craft she also practiced on the Hill. She holds a BS from the University of Texas, Austin, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porras was at Cornell from 2017\u201321, first as a postdoc in the Meinig School (where she won a Postdoc Achievement Award for Excellence in Community Engagement), then as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow. A native of Colombia, she came to the U.S. to pursue her passion for biomedical engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy advice to you? I wanted Option C: all of the above.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Sharp is a science communicator based in Denver, CO. She holds an undergrad degree from Brown and a doctorate from Harvard; on the Hill, she won an Innovative Teaching and Learning Award and was <a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.cornell.edu\/spotlights\/postdoc-spotlight-claire-meaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">featured during Postdoc Appreciation Week<\/a> in 2019. \u201cAs a kid I loved science, but then in college I had impostor syndrome,\u201d admits Meaders, who has herself served as a mentor to elementary-age girls.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t ask for help if I was confused\u2014I thought that would show I didn\u2019t belong in STEM. The effort garnered her Cornell\u2019s Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Award as well as a COVID-19 Response Award from the Clinton Global Initiative University. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe moment I saw a 3D printer in high school I was amazed by how simple yet complex the idea of stacking 2D layers is,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was that moment that summarized every reason why I was so passionate about engineering that also inspired me to pursue it and share its beauty with the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 two amazing engineers.\u201d Her earliest memories from childhood in Kenya include watching her parents build communication towers in rural areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would travel to these villages every weekend and I would play with the local children while watching my parents connect the villages to the rest of the world,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThese experiences with my family taught me that innovation can be used to solve many of the problems we face, and this inspired me to become a scientist.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She now focuses her research on
