{"id":73767,"date":"2026-07-10T12:43:40","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T16:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=73767"},"modified":"2026-07-10T12:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T16:46:08","slug":"bee-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/bee-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Buzzing With Excitement: This Student Group is a Hive of Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Attracting animal science majors, engineers, and more, the Bee Club shares a love of all things apian<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On a Monday just before the end of spring semester classes, Daniel Sorokin \u201927 carefully extracts a rectangular wooden hive frame that\u2019s covered with hundreds of bees moving on and around its honeycomb cells. Holding it aloft and examining it closely, he gently plucks one insect off with his fingers, barehanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a male bee, a drone,\u201d he tells about 20 assembled members of the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beeclubatcornell.org\/\">Bee Club at Cornell<\/a>, including some who&#8217;ve never seen a hive inspection before. \u201cYou can tell by their shape and size, and they don\u2019t have stingers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorokin, the club\u2019s vice president, looks completely relaxed as dozens of bees fly around him\u2014even though, unlike most of the members present, he\u2019s not wearing protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" calm and you know what you\u2019re doing,\u201d Sorokin explains. \u201cSometimes they get stuck in your hair and freak out\u2014and sometimes they do sting me, but it\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event, adorably named BeeBeeQue, is the club\u2019s annual year-end gathering; it offers food, free swag, and a tour of the hives\u2014each home to thousands of honeybees\u2014housed at Cornell\u2019s student-run <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/dilmun-hill-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dilmun Hill Farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Sometimes they get stuck in your hair and freak out\u2014and sometimes they do sting me, but it\u2019s not a big deal.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Daniel Sorokin \u201927<\/strong>, vice president<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorokin and others inspect the hives, looking for any deformities in the bees, examining them for signs of pathogens, and testing for varroa mites, a parasite that can attack hives and the bees themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese guys look pretty healthy right others are studying engineering, computer science, and a host of other fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Founded in 1997 and now tallying about 100 members, the club is dedicated to educating Cornellians and the public about bees, beekeeping, and the insects\u2019 importance as pollinators.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, past president Steve Hoge \u201924, a biology and society major in Arts &amp; Sciences, was the first author of a <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/cemetery-bees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted academic paper<\/a>, published in the journal <em>Apidologie<\/em> in spring 2026, describing the discovery of the world\u2019s biggest and oldest recorded population of ground-nesting bees\u2014in a cemetery near campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorokin, a computer science major from beehive with my dad in our backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorokin even taught an elective at his former high school and gave talks about beekeeping in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Past president Steve Hoge \u201924 was the first author of a noted academic paper describing the discovery of the world\u2019s biggest and oldest recorded population of ground-nesting bees\u2014in a cemetery near campus.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are more than 20,000 known species of bee\u2014and at least 95% don\u2019t make honey at all,\u201d he notes, explaining that the vast majority of species are solitary, building individual nests to raise their young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the club\u2019s board members\u2014Elias Xu \u201929, an electrical and computer engineering major in the Duffield College\u2014became involved with beekeeping as a high schooler in NYC while helping href=\"https:\/\/cei.ece.cornell.edu\/\">Collective Embodied Intelligence Lab<\/a>, Xu is researching insect group behavior for use in computer and AI applications\u2014specifically, how bees use pheromone scents as chemical messengers to communicate with the entire hive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy experience with Bee Club makes everything work better in my research at the lab,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a very big intersection that\u2019s been really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Outgoing president Samantha Durocher \u201926, an environment and sustainability major in CALS, got involved after taking a honeybee course on the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur primary goal isn\u2019t to produce a lot of honey,\u201d she points out. \u201cIt\u2019s to educate and just have fun managing the hives and bees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club\u2019s bees do produce a small amount each year; when it\u2019s extracted in the fall, members often do a tasting and take home they also host <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/beeclubatcornell\/\">bee-related events<\/a> that are typically open to the Cornell community, such as crafting candles and sustainable food wrap out of beeswax, workshops about nest box design, and talks by guest speakers like Big Red bee experts <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nbb.cornell.edu\/thomas-seeley\">Tom Seeley<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cals.cornell.edu\/people\/bryan-nicholas-danforth\">Bryan Danforth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club typically takes an annual tour of the University\u2019s <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cals.cornell.edu\/pollinator-network\/beekeeping\">Dyce Lab for Honey Bee Studies<\/a>, which has long assisted the group with its hives and colonies; last year, members visited a nearby honey house to see large-scale production in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Our primary goal isn\u2019t to produce a definitely see the importance of pollination, and I really value all the work that bees do,\u201d says member Jocelyn Nashtatik \u201928, an animal science major who serves as the club&#8217;s secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy family is a huge fan of honey, so one of my favorite things is being able to see how the bees and the hives work, and learning how to take care of
