As I squeeze into an overcrowded NYC subway car after work, I spot a familiar name: CORNELL, marching in bold red across a sweatshirt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, on the Hill, this sighting would have been anything but rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, however, as a graduate who is both far from Ithaca and navigating the unruly and wide world of adulthood, spotting a fellow Cornellian stirs a nostalgic flurry of memories: late-night frozen yogurt trips, sunsets on the Slope, caffeine-charged Olin nights, and frosty walks to my 9 a.m. lecture.<\/p>\n<\/div>

To me and many others, college after graduation settles into a memory. For four years, my identity, habits, goals, and routines were defined by my years as a student. On the narrow streets and brutal hills of Ithaca, community was woven into my everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Cornellian was truly a stranger\u2014clustered on the Hill, all students and faculty shared a certain Big Red camaraderie. From complaints about the winter weather to difficult courses, I had often found myself physically and emotionally immersed in a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the narrow streets and brutal hills of Ithaca, community was woven into my everyday life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This sense of Ithacan comfort and familiarity vanished as I entered the next chapter of my life: post-graduation, a liminal period of uncertainty, self-exploration, and reevaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without the stability of student life, my own identity and priorities are constantly being questioned and altered as I prepare for my own career. As work shifts have replaced classes, and friends once a door away moved to different cities, I\u2019ve found myself accompanied by something new: an unshakable loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, post-grad life has been rewarding in many ways: the long-awaited emergence into adulthood and the lack of exams and assignments have been liberating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet with this metamorphosis, I have also realized my own feelings of isolation and a longing to return to the Cornell campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What used to be spontaneous meet ups in Ithaca switched to months-in-advance appointments; familiar faces pixelated into text messages and phone calls; confidence I once had in the classroom dissipated in the professional office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was thrust into a world of strangers\u2014one that was much larger than I had expected\u2014in which I felt isolated from my peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an impromptu visit back to campus the fall after graduation, however, I suddenly realized that while I had been reminiscing about my memories in Ithaca, I had been overlooking the Cornell community right in front of me: the alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I perused the stacks on the sixth floor of Olin Library, I discovered a book tucked away at the edge of the shelf. Upon opening it, I was surprised to see names and check-out dates scrawling down the front page in pencil; the most recent was 1910.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holding this leather-bound book inspired mixed sensations of awe and companionship. Despite the 115-year gap between myself and the last person to have read the book, I unexpectedly found comfort in knowing that my predecessor was once too a student walking through the library stacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they had also read under the shade of the trees decorating the Arts Quad, or worried about assignment due dates on their walks home to Collegetown. And now, most importantly, perhaps they had also navigated the qualms, ambiguity, and loneliness after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I suddenly realized that while I had been reminiscing about my memories in Ithaca, I had been overlooking the Cornell community right in front of me: the alumni.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Through this metaphysical interaction with a fellow alum, I unlocked a new feeling of belonging\u2014this time not because of my status as a student or my location, but because of my alma mater and all it encompasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was reminded that each university is unique, and that it is exactly this distinctiveness that defines the fellowship amongst its alumni. I do not have to be on campus or a student to still feel a sense of belonging, even when alone in a large city or at home separated from my peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the alumni community reminds us that we are not alone, in adulthood and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My writing this very essay for Cornellians<\/em> is a testament to my decision to embrace the historical and expansive Big Red community after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when attending brief alumni reunions in the city, I am greeted with the same warmth I had felt during my undergrad years at a hockey game or a Collegetown Bagels trivia night; loneliness is no longer an actor in my post-grad life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, I remind all who have struggled with isolation after graduation that Cornell is not as far away as you may think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With hundreds of thousands of Cornellians around the globe, the community that has so significantly defined parts of our lives is actually right within our reach. While we have indeed descended the Hill, all that we have learned on it endures\u2014not just in our memories, but within the conversations and celebrations with our fellow alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
