Louis Livingston Seaman 1872.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: The Tank &quot;America&quot; arrives on campus, 1926\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ja8koOVMVoQ?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cIt stands not only for the ideals associated with its name,\u201d Seaman said at a dedication ceremony in May 1926, \u201cbut for noble expression of ideals\u2014the ideals of America and Cornell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although built in England, the tank had been funded through the efforts of the British War Relief Association of New York, of which Seaman was president: when approached by a philanthropist who wished to support the Allied cause, he noted the need for tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It stands not only for the ideals associated with its name, but for noble expression of ideals\u2014the ideals of America and Cornell.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Maj. When the military no longer needed it, Seaman lobbied for its donation to the University as a memorial to Cornellians who\u2019d lost their lives in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cornell contributed over 4,500 commissioned officers to World War I\u2014more than any other institution, even West Point\u2014and 265 alumni died in the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fallen would later be recognized with the <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/memorials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West Campus War Memorial<\/a>, but construction wouldn\u2019t begin until 1928, two years after the tank\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have learned to recognize in the name \u2018Cornell\u2019 a synonym for duty, patriotism, devotion, and the high virtue of citizenship,\u201d Seaman said at the dedication. \u201cThese are ideals branded on the souls of every one of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seaman\u2019s own dedication to Cornell and country was unquestionable. He enrolled at the University\u2019s opening in 1868, although he left early due to illness and didn\u2019t officially graduate until 1906, 34 years after his classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Cornell contributed over 4,500 commissioned officers to World War I\u2014more than any other institution, even West Point\u2014and 265 alumni died in the conflict.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, he earned two medical degrees and a law degree. As an army surgeon, he saw service in the Spanish-American, Russo-Japanese, and Balkan wars, and considered himself the first American officer to enter active service in WWI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seaman helped organize the Anglo-American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps in London in 1914, three years before the U.S. would formally enter the war\u2014proudly naming one of the rescue vehicles \u201cCornelia\u201d in recognition of alumni donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/Presentation_of_tank__America_A-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A crowd of men in uniform watch as Cornell receives the gift of a 29-ton, World War I tank. Dedicated to the Class of 1872 for its military service and noting the gift \u201cof the war tank \u2018America\u2019\u201d among its contributions, it was presented in 1927 by the class president: Louis Livingston Seaman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know what war is, both in its splendor and in its horror,\u201d Seaman said at the plaque\u2019s dedication, five years before his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am of Quaker origin and have no fighting mania in my blood; but I deem that any man who will not fight when justice, humanity, patriotism, and a proper sense of righteousness, honor, and self-respect are at stake is a disgrace to humankind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Seaman speaks at the dedication ceremony in May 1926.
