No one had prepared me for that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I don\u2019t know if I would have been able to write and publish that book had I known what was going to come of it, all the good and all the bad.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The novel spent six months on the <em>New York Times<\/em> hardcover bestseller list (and another six atop it in paperback) and was adapted as a 2006 film starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci that grossed $326 million worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was even turned into <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/devilwearspradamusical.com\/\">a musical<\/a>\u2014composed by none other than Sir Elton John\u2014that has played in London\u2019s West End since 2022, as well as in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/g_20cs_the_devil_wears_prada_2_7_a76811a9-1-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"a still image from the movie &quot;The Devil Wears Prada 2,&quot; it too has been a massive hit, grossing $666 million worldwide as of late May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The publicity and red-carpet events around the sequel\u2019s release have given Weisberger\u2014who has published seven other novels since her blockbuster debut\u2014reason to reflect on the legacy of the characters she created, and to marvel at how what was once controversial has become firmly embedded into pop culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny; It was a whole thing. And now it\u2019s completely changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the author hasn\u2019t appeared on magazine covers with Wintour, the legendary editor gifted her a Prada bag some years ago; Weisberger\u2019s daughter carried it on the red carpet for the new film\u2019s London premiere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As Weisberger <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DXaYvv6iWPO\/?img_index=1\">posted on Instagram<\/a>: \u201cLife is weird and wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that hasn\u2019t changed in the more than quarter-century since she took the job at <em>Vogue<\/em>? \u201cI have no actual working knowledge of the fashion world, whatsoever, truly,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>One thing that hasn\u2019t changed in the more than quarter-century since she took the job at <em>Vogue<\/em>? \u201cI have no actual working knowledge of the fashion world, whatsoever, truly,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying I don\u2019t love shoes or sometimes lust after a certain bag\u2014but as far as actual knowledge of, or interest in, high-fashion runway shows, anything like that? Zero. Less than zero.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Pennsylvania native, Weisberger majored in English in Arts &amp; Sciences with a minor in Near Eastern studies. it was funny and weird, and I saw a lot of famous people and a lot of excess,\u201d she recalls. \u201cSo I just started working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had this crazy year I worked at a fashion magazine; it was funny and weird, and I saw a lot of famous people and a lot of excess.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Months later, Weisberger shopped around a 100-page treatment\u2014and both the book and the film rights sold within weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s <em>Working Girl<\/em> meets Cruella de Vil,\u201d <em>Newsday<\/em> observed in a review, while <em>USA Today<\/em> noted that \u201cWeisberger does an excellent job capturing the overwrought hothouse atmosphere of the fashion magazine cosmos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other critics, though, saw the novel as spiteful, with the <em>New York Times<\/em> calling it a \u201cmean-spirited <em>Gotcha!<\/em> of a book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>But Weisberger insists that only in places like NYC, L.A., and London was the media hyper-focused on the Wintour connection; elsewhere, she says, readers simply connected with the story of a young woman in an impossibly stressful job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she recalls: \u201cThey would say to me, \u2018Oh my God, let me tell you what <em>my<\/em> boss did; This is crazy. This never happens\u2014and it\u2019s certainly never going to happen again,\u2019\u201d says Weisberger, who in fact went on to spend time on the set of the second film, in which she has another cameo (she and her family briefly appear as tourists in Central Park).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I remember thinking, \u2018This is a total once-in-a-lifetime thing. This is crazy. This never happens\u2014and it\u2019s certainly never going to happen again.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Weisberger went on to publish two <em>Prada<\/em> sequels\u2014<em>Revenge Wears Prada<\/em> and <em>When Life Gives You Lululemons\u2014<\/em>though neither forms the basis of the second film.
