that\u2019s actually a small percentage of what we do,\u201d observes David Honan, formerly CUPD chief and now head of the newly formed <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2022\/03\/new-division-will-unite-public-safety-efforts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Public Safety<\/a>. \u201cIt is about making sure our students are taken care of. Scott brought back even more information and experience to help us make sure we\u2019re connecting students to the right places.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It&#8217;s not all about the police work; that&#8217;s actually a small percentage of what we do.<\/p><cite><strong>David Honan<\/strong>, associate vice president for public safety<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Grantz was again promoted to sergeant in 2016, this time heading up the department\u2019s investigations unit. He now supervises four investigators and coordinates with other agencies and entities, both on campus and in the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, his CUPD duties have occasionally included liaising with the U.S. Secret Service on security for visiting dignitaries, including former President Bill Clinton (who gave the Convocation address in 2004) and current President Joe Biden (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2017\/05\/dignity-and-respect-are-american-ideals-biden-tells-seniors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who did the same<\/a>, as a former vice president, in 2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says Grantz: \u201cI\u2019ve learned that no matter how well planned those visits are, we need to be prepared to adjust the plan, whether someone wants another scoop of ice cream\u201d\u2014Biden is famously <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2017\/05\/seniors-dish-out-big-red-white-biden-convocation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fond of the frozen treat<\/a>\u2014\u201cor needs a cup of coffee at an inopportune moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the personal side, Grantz is married to a classmate, Deanna Sharpsteen Grantz \u201999. Sometimes that includes enforcement actions, sometimes it doesn\u2019t.
