But when you dig into it, it bites a little bit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in Binghamton (an hour southeast of Ithaca), Warfield specializes in combining soft sculpture and poetry\u2014creating works that feature fabric letters, primarily in pink hues, sewn together into words and phrases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img walls, or arranged in flag-like forms\u2014the art makes language physical and abstract, using phrases like \u201cthink louder through those parched lips\u201d; \u201cspeak from the back of your eyes\u201d; and \u201cpalms silently press lovely vessels and melt a warm mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn creating sculptural forms from fibers, she steps into a typically rigid and masculine space from a softer feminine perspective,\u201d observes <em>Suboart Magazine<\/em>, a publication for emerging artists. \u201cAnna\u2019s work is unabashedly feminine in nature, both in the materials throughout New York State, including at Corning\u2019s Rockwell Museum, Binghamton\u2019s Roberson Museum, Lehman College in the Bronx, and SUNY Oneonta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer work revolves around plush letterforms spelling out words and phrases that are often as prickly as her materials are soft and yielding,\u201d Syracuse\u2019s Everson Museum noted in an exhibition description. \u201cWarfield delights in the slippage between words and their meanings, leaving her viewers to read between the lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In creating sculptural forms from fibers, she steps into a typically rigid and masculine space from a softer feminine perspective.<\/p>\n<cite><em><strong>Suboart Magazine<\/strong><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1OqJnR4vEjQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one site-specific project<\/a> in 2023, the phrase \u201cBaptized by increasing extremes and drowning in unmet needs\u201d was hung in light blue letters beneath a bridge over the Susquehanna River in a Binghamton park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its intent, Warfield says, was to urge viewers to consider the impact of climate change on a city that struggles to meet the needs of its unhoused population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure miscommunication\u2014that fluid space where meaning shifts,\u201d says Warfield, who studied fine arts and communication in AAP and CALS and participated in the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oadi.cornell.edu\/signature-programs\/eop-heop\">Educational Opportunity Program<\/a>, which provides additional guidance and support to qualified students from New York State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Warfield\u2019s work invites and inspires the kind of participation that\u2019s happily reminiscent of toddlerhood: the interactive piece \u201cWord Play\u201d comprises a pile of Barbie-pink fabric words that participants can assemble into their own poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Her work revolves around plush letterforms spelling out words and phrases that are often as prickly as her materials are soft and yielding.<\/p>\n<cite>The <strong>Everson Museum<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe use of child learning tools may seem moderately condescending,\u201d they say, &#8220;but I think it\u2019s fun to have fun; you can ease hard conversations\u00a0with a sense of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Warfield explains, they were drawn to this artistic media in search of a greater sense of creativity and agency, and out of a need to feel heard\u2014particularly in a society that often dismisses young women\u2019s perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8230; allowed visitors to create sculptural poetry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While still a student, they began creating fabric books filled with drawings and poems, designed to be inviting objects that people would want to touch and explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt let me reclaim my voice and force people to sit with my words,\u201d Warfield recalls. \u201cI wanted that pretty desperately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Warfield was drawn to this artistic media in search of a greater sense of creativity and agency, and out of a need to feel heard\u2014particularly in a society that often dismisses young women\u2019s perspectives.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, they&#8217;re helping a younger generation learn to express themselves through art: they have taught local high school students how to create these signature fabric sculptures, with lessons in dyeing, cutting, sewing, and stuffing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result of that effort\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/rockwellmuseum.org\/exhibitions-collections\/exhibits-collections\/antigravity2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fast Colors Make a Slow Eye<\/a>,\u201d a dense arrangement of suspended poems\u2014was exhibited in the Rockwell Museum\u2019s entryway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure really interested in having people sit with uncertainty.
