{"id":70249,"date":"2026-05-12T09:13:45","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T13:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=70249"},"modified":"2026-05-12T09:25:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T13:25:36","slug":"bemis-fishes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/bemis-fishes\/","title":{"rendered":"For this Researcher and CALS Alum, Everything\u2019s Fishy (in a Good Way)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">On land and by sea, NOAA scientist and Smithsonian curator Katherine Bemis \u201915 collects and categorizes species<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In a storage space at the Smithsonian\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalhistory.si.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Museum of Natural History<\/a> in Washington, DC, Katherine Bemis \u201915 points out the skeletal jaws of a mako shark\u2014specifically the neat rows of teeth lined up like tapered daggers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey replace their teeth more or less rapidly, depending on what they feed on,\u201d explains Bemis, whose primary appointment is as a research zoologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ones out on the edges are the teeth the shark was using. And as they lose them or wear them down, the ones in the rows behind them move into place to become the main functional ones. So they never have to go to the dentist\u2014they\u2019re set.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" fishes and contributes to developing the DNA-based species reference libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These thousands upon thousands of ichthyological samples\u2014used for research, education, and outreach\u2014include specimens of all shapes and sizes, from teeth and vertebrae to entire skeletons, collected over nearly two centuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe can never go back in time to get more specimens from a specific place at a specific period,\u201d observes Bemis, who majored in natural resources in CALS, \u201cso each of these specimens is basically a time Aquarium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bemis\u2019s unusual dual position\u2014working both with the Smithsonian and with NOAA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/about\/national-systematics-laboratory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Systematics Laboratory<\/a>\u2014suits her research focus: the intersection of fish species identification and biology with the study of fishery sustainability and biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spends several months a year on the water, photographing fishes and collecting them and their DNA to identify species and add specimens to museum collections; in recent years, she has worked off the coasts of West and East Africa, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam, as well as along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We can never go back in time to get more specimens from a specific place at a specific period\u2014so each of these specimens is basically a time capsule.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her work helps ensure that fish are caught sustainably, that species are correctly identified in the marketplace, and that countries have accurate data on fishery health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the museum, Bemis curates the dry skeletal collections\u2014which include bones, cartilage, scales, and teeth\u2014kept in temperature- and humidity-controlled conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Thousands of other, \u201cwet\u201d specimens are preserved in alcohol and stored at a site in Maryland. called the clavus that, along with two fins, allows it to make deep dives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with Japan\u2019s Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, she has also studied the three-tooth puffer\u2014aiming to better understand the evolution of its inflation as a defensive behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Her work helps ensure that fish are caught sustainably, that species are correctly identified in the marketplace, and that countries have accurate data on fishery health.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And recently, she and a colleague discovered a previously unknown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/ferocious-predator-and-important-prey-new-barracudina-species-named-smithsonian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">species of barracudina<\/a> in U.S. waters in the North Atlantic, news they published in the <em>Journal of Fish Biology<\/em> in spring 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Bemis, ichthyology is the family business: her father is <a href=\"https:\/\/ecologyandevolution.cornell.edu\/william-bemis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Bemis \u201976<\/a>, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology in CALS, faculty curator of fishes for the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cumv.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museum of Vertebrates<\/a>, and an expert in the comparative anatomy and evolution of sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" pufferfish\u2014still among her favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her interest became a lifelong passion when, as a high schooler, she took two classes at Cornell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/shoals-marine-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shoals Marine Laboratory<\/a>, located on an island in the Gulf of Maine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got to have hands-on experience with frozen specimens,\u201d she recalls, \u201cand it was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img dragonets eventually became her undergrad honors thesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Bemis spent a gap year doing fishery surveys at sea with NOAA and working on specimens at the Smithsonian before earning a doctorate at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>While still in high school, Bemis began working on research projects at the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center; her studies on two species of deepwater dragonets eventually became her undergrad honors thesis.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And as it happens, when she was hired into her current job, she succeeded a retiring Cornellian: Bruce Collette \u201956, PhD \u201960, who remains a mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Bemis notes, less than half of the world\u2019s roughly 37,000 fish species have been sampled for specimen-based reference libraries and genetic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes her work will inform future science, as that of her predecessors has spurred her own studies: specimens collected generations ago are now a rich source of modern genetic lab at the museum includes more than a dozen undergrads, grad students, and postdocs from various institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Some of these DNA extraction methods have only come around in the last 30 years\u2014so who knows what we might be able to use our collections for in the future?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In spring 2026, one of them is <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mattyd797.github.io\/\">Matt Duggan<\/a>, a Cornell PhD candidate studying ways to use fish sounds to determine the species and population in an area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe has made me excited not just about my current work, but about becoming a scientist in this field,\u201d Duggan says of Bemis. \u201cOne of the most fun parts has been bringing specimens back and working with them together.
