The event, co-run by the Lab of Ornithology, is known as the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcount.org\/\">Great Backyard Bird Count<\/a> (GBBC)\u2014and it just keeps getting bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GBBC was founded in 1998 by the Lab and the National Audubon Society; a third parter, Birds Canada, signed on a decade later. Now, it draws individuals, birding clubs, school groups, and more; using the Lab\u2019s <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/merlin.allaboutbirds.org\/\">Merlin Bird ID<\/a> app and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/home\">eBird platform<\/a>, participants report sightings from all seven continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 count drew (per initial numbers) some 1.15 million people from 216 countries or <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/region\/world\/subregions\">eBird subregions<\/a>. They made 1.24 million Merlin identifications and submitted nearly 470,000 eBird checklists\u2014all told, spotting more than 8,200 avian species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote species.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA huge amount of people participate, and I think part of that is because it\u2019s a concentrated period of time,\u201d observes GBBC project leader Becca Rodomsky-Bish. \u201cNot everybody is going to become a devoted Merlin or eBird user\u2014but if you ask them to do it for 15 minutes on one of four days, it\u2019s pretty attainable for just about anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the notable happenings in 2026 were rare sightings of the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/eurrob1?\">European robin<\/a> (<em>Erithacus rubecula<\/em>) in the Canadian provinces of Qu\u00e9bec and Ontario and a massive flock of 120,000 <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/kinpen1\">King penguins<\/a> (<em>Aptenodytes patagonicus<\/em>) in the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, a British territory in the southern Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Not everybody is going to become a devoted Merlin or eBird rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macaulaylibrary.org\/\">Macaulay Library<\/a>, the archive that houses more than 95 million photos, videos, and sounds.
