Hayley Sopko Duffy \u201916, BS \u201917, is director of design and engineering at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, the popular Virginia theme park<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Hayley Sopko Duffy \u201916, BS \u201917, drops her three-year-old son off at daycare, the toddler has been known to declare that he\u2019d rather go to work with her. It\u2019s hard to blame him: after all, his mom helps run one of the nation\u2019s leading theme parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duffy is director of design and engineering at Busch Gardens Williamsburg<\/a>, the Virginia destination that offers adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, family-friendly rides, seasonal festivals, animal exhibits, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in a popular tourist region that\u2019s also home to the Colonial Williamsburg living museum, the park is divided into areas themed as Western European countries\u2014from a famed interlocking-loop coaster named for Scotland\u2019s Loch Ness Monster to a massive restaurant modeled after a German Oktoberfest, complete with oompah band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Duffy\u2019s job to oversee capital projects in the 130-acre theme park, as well as at Water Country USA<\/a>, its sister facility and the largest water park in the state\u2014hiring and working with the vendors who design and build rides, theming elements, lighting, sound systems, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s mostly project management, but it\u2019s really fun, because every day you\u2019re out on site looking at something\u2014and it\u2019s not just roller coasters, it\u2019s restaurants, bathrooms, anything in the park,\u201d says the Engineering alum. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice, fast-paced environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Duffy\u2019s job to oversee capital projects in the 130-acre theme park, as well as at Water Country USA, its sister facility and the largest water park in the state.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also one Duffy has been training for since\u2014well\u2014pretty much always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in New Jersey near Six Flags Great Adventure, she didn\u2019t just love riding roller coasters; she also designed and built them, using toy sets called K\u2019nex<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was addicted to them,\u201d she recalls with a laugh. \u201cI\u2019d get them for every Christmas and birthday. They\u2019re really cool. They come with a little coaster vehicle, there\u2019s a battery and a chain lift, and you can run the whole ride. I kept making them, and we\u2019d have them all in the basement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in high school, she worked as a ride operator for Great Adventure\u2019s Kingda Ka\u2014the world\u2019s tallest and fastest coaster when it opened in 2005. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also spent a summer interning on the park\u2019s engineering team, helping build the drop-tower ride Zumanjaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s mostly project management, but it\u2019s really fun, because every day you\u2019re out on site looking at something\u2014and it\u2019s not just roller coasters, it\u2019s restaurants, bathrooms, anything in the park.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On the Hill, she majored in mechanical engineering, was on the women\u2019s rugby team, and played baritone horn in the Big Red Marching Band (where she met her future husband, Brendan Duffy \u201917).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also spent an Engineering Co-op term at Premier Rides<\/a>; owned by fellow alum Jim Seay \u201984, it designs, maintains, and upgrades theme park attractions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gig included visiting one of the company\u2019s then-new coasters: Tempesto, which boasts a 154-foot-high inversion and a top speed of 63 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it happens, Tempesto is located at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, in its Italy section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI saved my badge that says, \u2018Contractor, Premier Rides, Hayley\u2019\u2014and now here I am, working here,\u201d Duffy says. \u201cIt\u2019s cool to have that full circle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, she spent a year at the defense contractor General Dynamics in Western Massachusetts. <\/p>\n<\/div>

She joined Busch Gardens (which is owned by the parent company of SeaWorld) as a project manager in summer 2018 and was promoted to director five years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a recent leadership transition, Duffy even spent five months as interim VP\u2014a notable role for someone less than a decade out of college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery day is different; I\u2019m at a water slide, then a roller coaster, then a restaurant,\u201d she says. \u201cI do love the variety and the novelty. And it\u2019s fun how fast everything happens. In my first job, we\u2019d have 50-year government contracts; now, we come up with an idea and it\u2019s in the park in three months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day is different; I\u2019m at a water slide, then a roller coaster, then a restaurant. I do love the variety and the novelty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Duffy\u2019s job is complicated\u2014in a good way\u2014by Busch Gardens Williamsburg\u2019s status as \u201cthe world\u2019s most beautiful theme park,\u201d an honor it has received from the National Amusement Park Historical Association for 35 consecutive years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re always trying to figure out how to keep that,\u201d she admits. \u201cAll our projects have to have a good theming budget. We can\u2019t just put up something that\u2019s functional but ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her tenure, Duffy has worked on a wide variety of projects\u2014from replacing the roof on Escape from Pompeii (a boat ride with fire effects and a 50-foot drop) to retheming Verbolten, an indoor-outdoor coaster reopening in spring 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love that roller coasters have this \u2018sky\u2019s-the-limit\u2019 feeling,\u201d Duffy observes. \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018Wow, this is what humans can do when they put their brains and resources together.\u2019 That\u2019s really inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over at Water Country USA, Duffy has had a hand in numerous projects including High Tide Harbor\u2014a splash-and-play area with 100+ interactive elements\u2014and Riptide Race, a pair of semi-enclosed slides that run side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes: once a new attraction has completed its many cycles of safety testing, Duffy gets to be among the first humans to ride it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you install something and it opens, you want to sneak out into the park and see how guests are interacting with it,\u201d she says. \u201cIt definitely puts a smile on my face to see them enjoying what we worked on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
