It may be a Spanish speaker who needs help navigating a doctor\u2019s appointment, a Korean-born couple attending a parent-teacher conference, or an immigrant from Ukraine aiming to access local food resources. Whatever the scenario, Cornell\u2019s Translator Interpreter Program<\/a> is ready to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as TIP, the student-led social justice organization trains and coordinates multilingual volunteers who provide translation and interpretation services throughout the local community, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m an immigrant myself, and trying to navigate something that\u2019s not in the language you normally speak can be very vulnerable and isolating,\u201d says Amy Kim \u201928, a global and public health science major in CALS who\u2019s both a co-president and a Korean-speaking volunteer for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we do is beyond simply translating; it\u2019s offering reassurance and comfort that they can advocate for what they need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a request comes in, one of the group\u2019s student coordinators quickly assigns a volunteer who speaks the needed language. Assignments vary widely\u2014from aiding a police agency that needs an interpreter late at night to enabling visitors to fully enjoy the Botanic Gardens by translating tour information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying to navigate something that\u2019s not in the language you normally speak can be very vulnerable and isolating.<\/p>\nCo-president Amy Kim \u201928<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Launched in 2000, TIP is the first and largest faculty-approved, student-run program of its kind in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was originally part of the Cornell Public Service Center (which became the Einhorn Center for Community Engagement) and is now under the aegis of the Language Resource Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With about 60 volunteers in 2025\u201326, it currently offers services in a dozen languages including Thai, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, and French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The volunteers work with local agencies and departments\u2014not individuals or businesses\u2014including refugee resettlement groups, medical providers, immigration asylum programs, school districts, farm worker assistance organizations, and law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(As TIP points out on its website, it\u2019s not approved to provided legal translation, a specialized service for official documents like contracts, licenses, and transcripts.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The volunteers work with local agencies and departments including refugee resettlement groups, medical providers, immigration asylum programs, school districts, and law enforcement.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Each new volunteer undergoes training and an exam to ensure they\u2019re equipped to be an interpreter\u2014a term that generally refers to oral communication\u2014or translator, the term applied to written materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we provide these services, we\u2019re also building relationships with the community,\u201d says ILR student Grace Ling \u201926, another co-president. \u201cThe organizations we work with might not be able to afford translation services or would have a hard time finding certain languages, so our goal is to bridge that gap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Fatema Gunja Sumar \u201901 founded TIP as an undergrad, fostering closer ties between Cornell and the local community was one of her goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arts & Sciences government major was inspired to launch the group after learning about a local Spanish-speaking family who\u2019d experienced a house fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to a language barrier, it was challenging for them to communicate with emergency responders, making a tragic situation even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumar teamed up with ILR alum Joyce Muchan \u201997, then Cornell\u2019s assistant director for student development, who served as the program\u2019s first advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a real mom-and-pop thing\u2014we did everything manually. We\u2019d get a call at 10 p.m. and I\u2019d go to my list of students who were certified in that language and start calling to see who was available,\u201d Sumar recalls of the program\u2019s early days. \u201cAfter I graduated, I didn\u2019t know what was going to happen to TIP; I\u2019m amazed that students have not only run with it, but systematized it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumar\u2014who\u2019s now executive director<\/a> of the Harvard Center for International Development and an adjunct lecturer in public policy\u2014returned to the Hill for a symposium marking TIP\u2019s 25th anniversary in fall 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we provide these services, we\u2019re also building relations with the community.<\/p>\nCo-president Grace Ling \u201926<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The group has garnered numerous honors over the years, including the City of Ithaca\u2019s Town-Gown Award and a humanitarian award from the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, TIP won<\/a> Cornell\u2019s Perkins Prize for Interracial and Intercultural Peace and Harmony, given annually to the student, faculty member, staffer, or program \u201cmaking the most significant contribution to furthering the ideal of university community while respecting the values of racial diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For TIP members\u2014many of whom are themselves immigrants, the children of immigrants, or new to the U.S. as international students\u2014volunteering with the group can have strong personal meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy parents immigrated from Mexico, and I witnessed firsthand how they struggled, especially in the healthcare setting,\u201d says co-president Angelica Ochoa \u201927, an information science major in Arts & Sciences. \u201cTo be a part of an organization that helps people like them is inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
