As winter ends, all around the Northeast, salamanders and frogs emerge from their upland habitats ready to find a mate. Approximately 3,000 of those had been killed.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese guys, unfortunately, need our help,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/about-us\/people\/brandon-p-hedrick-phd\">Brandon Hedrick<\/a>, assistant professor in CVM\u2019s Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences and a TCAMP advisory board member. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge mortality risk to walk across a road at like 0.5 meters per minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Road mortality isn\u2019t the only factor threatening salamander populations. They\u2019re also sensitive to habitat loss, climate change, disease, and pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmphibians are among the most threatened vertebrate groups on the planet,\u201d says Bredin. \u201cAlmost half of all amphibian species are threatened or endangered, and 60% of salamander species are threatened or endangered, and they\u2019re declining rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure emerge and several teams of volunteers to patrol, including a group self-titled A Newt Hope, which braved the darkness and drizzle to walk a portion of Sapsucker Woods Road, near the Lab of Ornithology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to be a special type of crazy to come out here in the rain to help save little salamanders,\u201d says A Newt Hope member Sam Rimm-Kaufman, MLA \u201925, \u201cbut it is fun, and very rarely do you have an opportunity to be that engaged with the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow amphibians in the road at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSalamanders did not evolve with roads in mind,\u201d Hedrick says, \u201cand as a result are not aware of how dangerous they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bredin founded TCAMP in 2023, bringing together existing patrol efforts underway within CVM and at Ithaca College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, more than 300 volunteers have patrolled in five counties; by early March, they had documented more than 2,000 individual amphibians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data volunteers collect can inform conservation efforts and further research.
