\u201cProfs embrace cannabis, \u2018other postmodern subjects,\u2019\u201d the 2021 story continued\u2014then launched into a detailed report on the supposed plans for the rebranded department, just weeks after New York State legislators had voted to legalize recreational marijuana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article, which appeared in last year\u2019s joke issue of the paper\u2014renamed the Cornell Nightly Moon<\/em>\u2014was unlikely to fool anyone, but that wasn\u2019t the point. It was part of the Sun<\/em>\u2019s decades-long tradition of producing an annual parody edition packed with riffs on campus events, student concerns, and the tribulations of life on the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was an issue that people picked up, took to show their friends, laughed at, and talked about,\u201d says Sun<\/em> senior editor Madeline Rosenberg \u201923.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The parody tradition, she says, gives the paper\u2019s <\/em>writers, editors, photographers, and designers an opportunity for creativity\u2014a chance to laugh at themselves and at campus life, and to take a break from the intensity of their regular gigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether they\u2019re crafted to trick the gullible or are simply outlandish, the Sun<\/em>\u2019s parodies have appeared at various times of the year over the decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In past eras, they often popped up in the fall\u2014making newly arrived first-years even more susceptible to panic-inducing tales of housing assignment changes and grading system overhauls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, the joke issue\u2014typically a four-page wrap around the regular edition\u2014found a home on April Fool\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that changed in 2012: beloved former President Dale Corson died on March 31, and out of respect the Sun<\/em> pushed the publication date back a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It landed on April 20\u2014the \u201c4\/20\u201d of innumerable marijuana references\u2014and the parody issue has come out on that date ever since. Thus the \u201cGet Lit\u201d headline, and many similar japes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the annual joke issues were long limited to print, in 2020\u2014when students left campus due to the pandemic\u2014it went online for the first time; now, there\u2019s a \u201c4\/20\u201d drop-down menu<\/a> on the homepage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a joke section,\u201d says the landing page, \u201ccurated by Sun<\/em> editors who are tired\u2014but not tired enough to stop making 4\/20 jokes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun with \u2018fake news\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most of the Sun<\/em>\u2019s early parodies were meant to fool readers and even provoke outrage; often, a \u201cwho to call\u201d box listed actual administrators\u2019 phone numbers, guaranteeing headaches for Day Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of the joke issues give a unique glimpse into aspects of student life in earlier eras,\u201d says University history expert Corey Earle \u201907. \u201cWhat were the controversial topics at the time? In 1959, a story noted that due to \u201ca colossal geological blunder,\u201d the then-under-construction Olin Library would be abandoned, as the entire building was sinking into the Arts Quad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUniversity to Leave Ivy League Due to New Academic Calendar,\u201d proclaimed a 1964 report, which noted that the change would abolish spring sports (and quoted Robert Kane \u201934, BS \u201936, the then-director of athletics, who wept over the crew team\u2019s uncertain future).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some \u201cfake news\u201d stories even proved true\u2014eventually. \u201cNew York Legislature Raises Minimum Drinking Age to 21,” the Sun<\/em> announced in 1962, more than two decades before it actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many joke stories involved outlandish construction proposals\u2014often on the hallowed Arts Quad, which would allegedly see such abominations as a 35-story skyscraper (1942); an aeronautical research facility smack in the middle (1966); and a subterranean parking lot (1970).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Other stories targeted student stress points: all classes would henceforth be graded on a \u201cC\u201d curve; Study Week would be reduced to 48 hours; Thanksgiving break was canceled; New York State had outlawed co-ed dorms; compulsory ROTC for male undergrads had been reinstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the 1950s, \u201960s, and \u201970s, many parody issues aped the style of other publications, from the New York Daily News<\/em> to the National Enquirer<\/em> and even the Harvard Crimson<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In more recent years, the satirical issues\u2014with \u201cThis is a joke\u201d prominently in the masthead\u2014have sported such headlines as \u201cCampus Climate Task Force Confirms Ithaca Is Too Cold,\u201d \u201cTrump Tower to Rise in Collegetown,\u201d and \u201cGolf Class Now Required for Business Minor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really deliberate about what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Rosenberg says, noting that transparency is key in today\u2019s digital age of deepfakes, disinformation campaigns, and social media. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to be really clear about what is a joke and what is not\u2014that what we\u2019re doing is trying to make people laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
