Justin McManus \u201903 is the fourth-generation owner of his family pub\u2014familiar to viewers of \u201cSeinfeld,\u201d \u201cLaw & Order,\u201d and more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been a staple of Manhattan\u2019s Irish pub culture for decades, occupying the northwest corner of Seventh Avenue and 19th Street in Chelsea since 1936. The Peter McManus Caf\u00e9<\/a>\u2014the oldest family-run bar in NYC\u2014is now operated by fourth-generation owner Justin McManus \u201903.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat makes this place work so well is how much things haven\u2019t changed,\u201d the Hotelie says, sitting in the pub\u2019s cozy dining room in February 2026. \u201cThis is a classic spot, and so many things are original. You don\u2019t find crown molding or hand-carved wood like this anymore; you have to cherish that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pub\u2019s custom-crafted bar stretches deep into the eatery\u2019s interior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classic light fixtures, colorful stained-glass, plaid curtains, a vintage cash register, and ornate dark wood details set a relaxed backdrop for the well-stocked shelves of Irish whiskeys, beers on draught, and other offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you haven\u2019t visited the bar in person, you\u2019ve likely caught glimpses in movies and TV shows\u2014from Highlander<\/em>, Radio Days<\/em>, and The Other Guys<\/em> to \u201cSeinfeld,\u201d \u201cBroad City,\u201d \u201cLaw & Order,\u201d and \u201cSuccession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this place work so well is how much things haven\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no surprise that the pub is a draw for filmmakers, as its setting works both for period pieces and as a present-day throwback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall atmosphere\u2014including a bullet hole in a stained-glass pane behind the bar, a memento of a long-ago dispute\u2014harkens back to an older, more rough-and-tumble Big Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McManus\u2019s is known for its Irish beers\u2014Guinness in particular\u2014and liquors, award-winning burgers (it took Time Out<\/em>\u2019s \u201cBattle of the Burger\u201d title in 2016 and 2018), Reuben sandwiches, and traditional corned beef and cabbage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eater NY<\/em> has called it \u201ca port in the storm in a rapidly changing city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McManus\u2019s great-grandfather, Peter, founded the establishment\u2019s first incarnation\u2014which Justin describes as \u201ca longshoreman\u2019s bar\u201d\u2014at 46th Street and 11th Avenue in 1911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It weathered Prohibition by becoming a general goods store, and when the pub\u2019s current spot became available, Peter moved the business there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin grew up in Midtown; as a student at Bronx High School of Science, he regularly helped out at the bar. While on the Hill, he worked at the Statler, as both a waiter at Banfi\u2019s and a bartender at its Regent Lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation\u2014he was the first college grad in the family\u2014he sought out other restaurant experiences, though he realized the pub would eventually be his destiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI always knew I would have a piece of me here, no matter what,\u201d he says, \u201cdepending on how much it needed my attention and TLC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McManus spent several years at restaurants like Tabla and the upscale Rosa Mexicano chain before taking a break in 2006 to backpack around Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following year, he was cast in the YES Network\u2019s reality show \u201cUltimate Road Trip<\/a>,\u201d and followed his beloved Yankees throughout the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning home, he took on weekly bartending shifts at McManus Caf\u00e9 while launching his own nearby sports bar with two partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJay-Z was the first person to walk into our place, the very first night we opened,\u201d McManus recalls with a laugh, \u201cbut he was looking for the club next door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After six years, McManus returned to the family business full time, as his dad began to step back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He kept most things as they were, though he did upgrade its three TVs to high-def flatscreens and began accepting credit cards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always knew I would have a piece of me here, no matter what, depending on how much it needed my attention and TLC.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

His one major improvement was updating the bar\u2019s ancient draught beer system\u2014which chilled the lines with ice packed around copper coils and powered the taps via air compressor\u2014to a modern one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new system finally allowed the pub to offer Guinness on tap\u2014giving it, he says, \u201cthe proper blend and creamy head of a fresh-pulled pint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McManus Caf\u00e9 had a viral moment in late January 2026, when actor Will Arnett gave it a shout-out on the YouTube series \u201cHot Ones<\/a>\u201d\u2014mentioning that he\u2019d frequented it in the \u201990s and held one of the high scores on the bar\u2019s golf arcade game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(McManus quickly posted the clip<\/a> on Instagram.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen times are good, people drink\u2014and when times are bad, they drink more,\u201d McManus says with a chuckle. \u201cBut ultimately, people want to be around people; it gives a sense of community. That has never changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
