\u201cThere are ups and downs when it comes to being a club sports team, where there\u2019s not the same kind of recruitment you get at the varsity level,\u201d observes Matthew Lane \u201927. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot about seeing who wants to show up and be part of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to Lane\u2019s sport\u2014men\u2019s rugby<\/a>\u2014the current level of commitment can make you wonder whether members missed the memo about it being played at the club level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll practice at 9 p.m. in the winter, when it\u2019s cold and snowing,\u201d says Lane, a CALS animal science major who has been on the team since freshman year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat wouldn\u2019t be possible without the level of dedication that every member puts forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Men\u2019s rugby is one of the oldest student groups on the Hill, having fielded teams since 1879.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(A women\u2019s team<\/a> began playing consistently about a century later, as female athletes saw their opportunities broaden dramatically in the 1970s in the wake of the Title IX gender-equity legislation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Red rugby even boasts an Olympic champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alan Williams 1915<\/a> is the only Ivy League player to win a gold medal in the sport at the Games, earned in Paris in 1924\u2014a result that sparked rioting by French fans when the host nation fell to the U.S. in the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many club\u2014and varsity\u2014sports, the Cornell team\u2019s success has varied widely over the past century and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Red has yet to have an opponent cross its goal line in two years,\u201d the Daily Sun<\/em> reported in 1965, going on to observe: \u201cThe Cornell Rugby Club is composed of an odd assortment of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team saw a spate of losing seasons starting in the late 2010s\u2014but this academic year, it has come roaring back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It won the Liberty League championship, going undefeated against such rivals as Marist, RPI, and RIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the National Collegiate Rugby championship<\/a> for its division, the Big Red beat the returning national champs (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) in a 24-12 upset before falling in the quarterfinals to UVM, the eventual winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team owes its current success to members with varying levels of experience at playing the physically and mentally grueling contact sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how Lane\u2014who grew up playing competitively at a private high school in NYC\u2014became teammates with Cornellians like Thomas Duver \u201927, who had never played before but is now a starter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team owes its current success to members with varying levels of experience at playing the physically and mentally grueling contact sport.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Duver learned the rules on the pitch just after joining the club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He and his fellow players now train nearly every day\u2014if there\u2019s too much snow on the ground, they\u2019ll hit the weight room\u2014with the season spanning both the fall and spring semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe game is self-selecting, because it\u2019s really difficult,\u201d says Duver, an applied economics and management major in Dyson. \u201cIt takes passion\u2014but we\u2019re willing to take anybody who wants to dedicate their time and effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the most popular type of rugby, 15 players from each team are on the pitch at any given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(That form was last played at the Olympics in 1924, the year Williams won gold; a seven-on-seven version was introduced in Rio in 2016.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The game is self-selecting, because it\u2019s really difficult. It takes passion\u2014but we\u2019re willing to take anybody who wants to dedicate their time and effort.<\/p>\nThomas Duver \u201927<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Their objective is to score a \u201ctry\u201d\u2014akin to a touchdown in football\u2014by bringing the ball into the end zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players can run the ball forward, but can only pass to teammates who are behind them. It\u2019s a fast, physical game\u2014one played without helmets or other heavy-duty protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not the big memories of winning a trophy that matter most\u2014it\u2019s the combination of all the small moments of knowing that people support you in ways you don\u2019t find in every social or athletic program,\u201d says Lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re running at practice and you\u2019re behind, everybody will clap for you to finish. No one\u2019s ever putting you down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a fast, physical game\u2014one played without helmets or other heavy-duty protective gear.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That positive culture is something that Vince Stasolla \u201993, who played for three years, hears about from past team members spanning decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CALS alum is a team representative to Faded Red<\/a>, an alumni organization that helps both men\u2019s and women\u2019s rugby financially and with general planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you go to a school that\u2019s as difficult as Cornell is, and you\u2019ve been out in the cold and rain playing rugby,\u201d he says, \u201cyou form a common connection where you\u2019re all brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Big Red squad includes international students from a dozen countries, many of which have a rich history in the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It even boasts players who\u2019ve been on the national teams of countries like Zimbabwe, Scotland, and Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you go to a school that\u2019s as difficult as Cornell is, and you\u2019ve been out in the cold and rain playing rugby, you form a common connection where you\u2019re all brothers.<\/p>\nVince Stasolla \u201993<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But while some members have high-level experience, all are welcome: the team does not cut players, and those who join with less-developed skills are coached to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRugby is a sport for everybody and \u2018every body,\u2019\u201d says Mylo Skolnick \u201926, an ILR student who grew up playing in Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a big guy who\u2019s trying to get in shape, there\u2019s a position for you. If you\u2019re a little smaller but fast, there\u2019s a spot for you. It\u2019s a super-inclusive environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
