Veteran actor Carla Gallo \u201997 has a long list of credits on TV and in movies\u2014and now, she\u2019s co-starring in the hit comedy \u2018Platonic\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carla Gallo \u201997 has interned as a researcher in a crime-solving unit; performed in a traveling carnival; worked as an accountant at a family-run zoo; investigated biker gangs as a federal agent; and even contemplated a career in the adult film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would seem a strangely eclectic r\u00e9sum\u00e9\u2014except that Gallo is a prolific actor, and these are just a few of her many characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her impressive list of credits<\/a> includes the forensic-themed mystery series \u201cBones\u201d; HBO\u2019s Depression-era dark fantasy show \u201cCarniv\u00e0le\u201d; and \u201cUndeclared,\u201d a sitcom about navigating college life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Her part as an aspiring porn star? That was in the David Duchovny dramedy \u201cCalifornication.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallo is currently co-starring in \u201cPlatonic,\u201d an Apple TV+ comedy in which two former best friends\u2014played by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne\u2014reconnect as adults and navigate their new friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the series, which was recently renewed for a third season, Gallo plays Katie, a quirky mother who\u2019s a friend of the main duo; seen at school and social gatherings, she often makes questionable decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Gallo\u2019s first major job following the entertainment industry\u2019s back-to-back disruptions of the pandemic and the Writers\u2019 Guild strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Platonic\u2019 was the perfect role for me; I can\u2019t believe that in my late 40s I\u2019d get one of the best jobs I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a comfort show that\u2019s light and fun. I hope this one runs for a really long time, because it just keeps getting better and better and has really found an audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t believe that in my late 40s I\u2019d get one of the best jobs I\u2019ve ever had.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Gallo was \u201cdiscovered\u201d as a senior at Manhattan\u2019s LaGuardia High School\u2014an elite institution specializing in the performing and visual arts\u2014when the casting director of the indie film Spanking the Monkey<\/em> spotted her; she shot the movie before heading to the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But her love of performing came much earlier: in second grade, when her teacher (also the theater director) encouraged the shy youngster to take the lead in the school play, Cinderella Wore Combat Boots.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI remember the audience laughing and applauding,\u201d says Gallo. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not kidding: that feeling was the \u2018click\u2019 for me of knowing I wanted to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bruce Levitt, a longtime professor of performing and media arts on the Hill, recalls directing Gallo in a production of the Sam Shepard family drama A Lie of the Mind<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallo played the level-headed younger sister of the play\u2019s violent, troubled protagonist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCarla was quite wonderful and a delight to work with,\u201d Levitt says.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cShe had a very strong stage presence and terrific imagination, always making great choices as she developed the character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from Arts & Sciences with a degree in theatre arts, Gallo moved back to her family home in Brooklyn and worked as a receptionist while auditioning for TV and movies in NYC and LA, ultimately relocating to the West Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of her first TV roles was on \u201cUndeclared,\u201d in which she played a college freshman who was studying psychology and dating the lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her next project, \u201cCarniv\u00e0le,\u201d she was a much different character: a young woman in the 1930s Dust Bowl whose family runs an exotic dance act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallo also appeared in the movie Neighbors <\/em>and its sequel\u2014both also featuring Rogen and Byrne, her \u201cPlatonic\u201d costars\u2014about the chaos that ensues when a fraternity moves next door to a young couple with a baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carla was quite wonderful and a delight to work with. She had a very strong stage presence and terrific imagination.<\/p>\nProf.<\/strong> Bruce Levitt<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Among her most high-profile roles to date was on Fox TV\u2019s \u201cBones,\u201d where she appeared in some three dozen episodes over nearly a decade as Daisy, an eager (and very chatty) intern at the forensic lab where the show is based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it ended in 2017, she and castmate Emily Deschanel currently cohost a rewatch podcast, dubbed Boneheads<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Gallo\u2019s many credits, she admits that she\u2019s had an up-and-down pathway in Hollywood, and has sometimes worked outside the industry to make ends meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve probably had over 3,000 auditions and a handful of beautiful jobs\u2014but there were so many more that I thought I was going to get and put my heart into, but never even got a response,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s actually easier to leave than to endure it, because there\u2019s so much rejection. I\u2019m proud I have stuck to it and never left. My biggest goal is very basic: to never stop working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
