{"id":64573,"date":"2026-01-12T16:50:31","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=64573"},"modified":"2026-01-12T16:50:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:50:32","slug":"raptor-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/raptor-program\/","title":{"rendered":"At Cornell&#8217;s Raptor Program, Animal Care and Education Take Wing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">For more than three decades, student and alumni volunteers have tended to eagles, hawks, vultures, owls, and more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Inside a barn on East Hill, a one-eyed golden eagle named Esther ruffles her feathers as she sits on her favorite toy ball; meanwhile, Gracie the one-winged bald eagle loudly chirps in a neighboring enclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, both birds sustained life-changing injuries after being shot in the wild. But they landed in one of the best possible places: the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cornell.edu\/raptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Raptor Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of CALS\u2019 animal science department, the program houses some two dozen birds\u2014from an American kestrel to a peregrine falcon to four species of owl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" returning to their natural habitat after rehabilitation, and most will stay in the program\u2019s care for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really rewarding when you see clear signs that the bird trusts you after the months of hard work that you\u2019ve put into building that relationship,\u201d says Angelina Tang \u201928, one of the program\u2019s more than 30 student volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It\u2019s really rewarding when you see clear signs that the bird trusts you after the the raptors and clean their enclosures, but offer them enrichment activities, like figuring out how to get their food out of a ball-shaped toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And since one of the program\u2019s main goals is to educate the public about raptor conservation and biology, avian residents make regular appearances at events on campus and in the community\u2014including in classrooms on the Hill and volunteers are assigned to help care for a small number of raptors\u2014sometimes just one\u2014so they can form relationships with them and learn to cater to their specific needs; alumni also help out, especially over the summer and during breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><blockquote><p>Student volunteers not only feed the raptors and clean their enclosures, but offer them enrichment activities.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the birds I work with is Morty the turkey vulture,\u201d says Tang. \u201cSometimes we\u2019ll stand in front of a window while he\u2019s on my glove, because vultures like the sun. He\u2019ll open his wings and envelop me in them, like a little hug.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A double major in communication and animal science, Tang also cares for a red-tailed hawk named Guinevere (or Gwen for short). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At public education programs, Gwen offers an example of why people shouldn\u2019t keep wild animals as pets: taken in as a chick, she couldn\u2019t develop the proper Meghan Jensen, a scientist and educator who holds a doctorate in wildlife biology from West Virginia University. \u201cFred, one of our northern goshawks, can fly through a hula hoop, and students have taught her how to fetch a little stuffed monkey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The raptors have even been featured in a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DDsxMIcO_0U\/\">2024 episode<\/a> of &#8220;Dean Does New Things,&#8221; an Instagram series in which Dean of Students Marla Love gets out of her comfort zone\u2014in this case, overcoming a discomfort with birds by meeting several of them up close.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the program was founded in 1993, it has gained residents from all over the country\u2014many having been transported to Ithaca for treatment at the College of Veterinary Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/hospitals\/janet-l-swanson-wildlife-hospital\" Known as E3, he\u2019s the offspring of famed East Hill red-tailed hawks Big Red and Ezra, and his 2014 hatching was viewed by thousands on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/cams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lab of Ornithology\u2019s Bird Cam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a fledgling, E3 collided with a greenhouse and injured his wing.
