{"id":64248,"date":"2025-12-24T14:10:54","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T19:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=64248"},"modified":"2025-12-24T14:10:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T19:10:55","slug":"womens-hockey-derraugh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/womens-hockey-derraugh\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Remember They\u2019re Playing for the Love of the Game\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A former Big Red star himself, women\u2019s ice hockey coach Doug Derraugh \u201991 has led the squad to five ECAC championships<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/sports\/womens-ice-hockey\/roster\/coaches\/doug-derraugh-91\/11816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Derraugh \u201991<\/a> committed to play ice hockey for the Big Red as an undergrad, it was Lynah Rink\u2019s electric atmosphere that helped seal the deal. That\u2019s why I love being in the college environment. In a small way, you have a chance to influence not only their hockey but their lives\u2014and help them grow, so when they leave here, they\u2019re ready for life.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I think my players would say I\u2019m passionate, invested, and loyal; some may say demanding. In his final pro season, he also served as a special teams coach. He makes sure everyone knows what it takes to be an elite player\u2014and will put in any amount of time to help each individual person get better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>He understands and appreciates that there is life outside of hockey, and makes it clear that his goal is to help shape us as people who will succeed and live a fulfilled life.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Sarah MacEachern \u201926<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Zandee-Hart\u2019s fondest memories are the team\u2019s post-win screaming sessions in the locker room\u2014a tradition that, perhaps surprisingly, was started by the typically calm and unflappable Derraugh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was such a great environment,\u201d Zandee-Hart recalls of playing for the Big Red. \u201cCoach has such a good read on his team.
