{"id":63653,"date":"2025-12-17T10:50:54","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T15:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=63653"},"modified":"2025-12-17T18:32:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T23:32:47","slug":"hintlian-teddie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/hintlian-teddie\/","title":{"rendered":"What Has a Bear Mascot and a Whole Lot of Devoted Fans?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">It\u2019s not just the Big Red\u2014It\u2019s Teddie Peanut Butter, a 100-year-old family company run by a second-generation Cornellian<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On a Wednesday morning during the fall 2025 semester, a student crossing Sage Atrium spies Jamie Hintlian \u201982, MEng \u201985, MBA \u201986, and makes a beeline for him. Hintlian, a senior lecturer in the Johnson College of Business, is also CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/teddie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teddie Peanut Butter Company<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The brand, which has had a loyal following in New England for decades, has recently been\u2014pun intended\u2014<em>spreading<\/em> nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student excitedly tells Hintlian that he\u2019s a huge fan\u2014and that when he recently got a puppy, he of course chose the all-natural PB brand to fill its Kong toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s quite a fan base,\u201d Hintlian says after the student dashes off to class. \u201cThat happens all the time\u2014everybody\u2019s got a Teddie story, it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hintlian is part of the third generation to run the family-owned, Boston-area Teddie and its favorite, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2025, has been cautiously expanding across the U.S., to stores like Publix, Whole Foods, BJs, Wegmans, Walmart, Target, and Shoprite, as well as on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand has twice garnered the top ranking from the <em>New York Times\u2019 Wirecutter<\/em> review site, which in 2023 called its smooth version \u201cone of only two peanut butters that got a unanimous thumbs-up from every member of our tasting panel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/reviews\/best-creamy-peanut-butter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated in August 2025<\/a>, with Teddie holding onto the top spot among 15 varieties\u2014beating out popular rivals like Smucker\u2019s and Trader Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It \u201cchecks all the boxes: it has good, spreadable body, great salt content, a pleasant grainy texture, and fresh-roasted peanut flavor,\u201d the site said, noting its \u201cnuttiness burst on the palate\u201d and \u201cit holds its form atop sliced bread without oozing out the sides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>According to <em>Wirecutter<\/em>, Teddie &#8216;checks all the boxes: it has good, spreadable body, great salt content, a pleasant grainy texture, and fresh-roasted peanut flavor.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Teddie traces its roots to when Hintlian\u2019s grandfather, an Armenian immigrant, arrived in Boston more than a century ago and started working at a candy business in the city\u2019s North End.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1925, he and a partner launched a nutritious, inexpensive, and shelf stable\u2014so they turned to peanut butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cTeddie\u201d brand\u2014named for the son of an operations manager\u2014was established by 1931, and the cartoon bear logo followed soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hintlian\u2019s father, former electrical engineering major Jim Hintlian \u201949, joined Teddie after serving in the Navy; he
