It\u2019s not just the Big Red\u2014It\u2019s Teddie Peanut Butter, a 100-year-old family company run by a second-generation Cornellian<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a Wednesday morning during the fall 2025 semester, a student crossing Sage Atrium spies Jamie Hintlian \u201982, MEng \u201985, MBA \u201986, and makes a beeline for him. Hintlian, a senior lecturer in the Johnson College of Business, is also CEO of the Teddie Peanut Butter Company<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand, which has had a loyal following in New England for decades, has recently been\u2014pun intended\u2014spreading<\/em> nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student excitedly tells Hintlian that he\u2019s a huge fan\u2014and that when he recently got a puppy, he of course chose the all-natural PB brand to fill its Kong toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s quite a fan base,\u201d Hintlian says after the student dashes off to class. \u201cThat happens all the time\u2014everybody\u2019s got a Teddie story, it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hintlian is part of the third generation to run the family-owned, Boston-area Teddie and its parent company, the Leavitt Corporation.<\/p>\n<\/div>

His wife, former CALS food science major Carolyn Bristor Hintlian \u201983, MS \u201986, is its technical director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regional favorite, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2025, has been cautiously expanding across the U.S., to stores like Publix, Whole Foods, BJs, Wegmans, Walmart, Target, and Shoprite, as well as on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand has twice garnered the top ranking from the New York Times\u2019 Wirecutter<\/em> review site, which in 2023 called its smooth version \u201cone of only two peanut butters that got a unanimous thumbs-up from every member of our tasting panel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rating was updated in August 2025<\/a>, with Teddie holding onto the top spot among 15 varieties\u2014beating out popular rivals like Smucker\u2019s and Trader Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It \u201cchecks all the boxes: it has good, spreadable body, great salt content, a pleasant grainy texture, and fresh-roasted peanut flavor,\u201d the site said, noting its \u201cnuttiness burst on the palate\u201d and \u201cit holds its form atop sliced bread without oozing out the sides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Wirecutter<\/em>, Teddie ‘checks all the boxes: it has good, spreadable body, great salt content, a pleasant grainy texture, and fresh-roasted peanut flavor.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Teddie traces its roots to when Hintlian\u2019s grandfather, an Armenian immigrant, arrived in Boston more than a century ago and started working at a candy business in the city\u2019s North End.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1925, he and a partner launched a salted nuts company in Boston\u2019s Quincy Market. <\/p>\n\n\n

When the Great Depression hit, they wanted to produce a food that was nutritious, inexpensive, and shelf stable\u2014so they turned to peanut butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cTeddie\u201d brand\u2014named for the son of an operations manager\u2014was established by 1931, and the cartoon bear logo followed soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hintlian\u2019s father, former electrical engineering major Jim Hintlian \u201949, joined Teddie after serving in the Navy; he became president and CEO in 1955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1960, to meet growing demand, the company moved to an expanded facility in the northern suburb of Everett. That\u2019s where Teddie Peanut Butter\u2014along with other peanut, tree-nut, and mixed-nut products\u2014is still made today, under an iconic rooftop sign that sports an sprinting version of the bear mascot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Jamie\u2019s brother became president and CEO in 2007, Jamie himself\u2014having majored in operations research in the Engineering college and earned two master\u2019s degrees on the Hill\u2014didn\u2019t join the business until after a long career in supply chain consulting at Accenture and Ernst & Young.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He returned to Leavitt (which is named for his grandfather\u2019s original partner) and Teddie in 2018 as chief operating officer, and became CEO when his brother retired in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon after joining the family firm, Jamie returned to the Hill part time\u2014alternating between Boston and Ithaca for much of each semester as he teaches in the Johnson Graduate School of Management, leads programs in strategic operations, and is the academic director for the master\u2019s program in business analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carolyn, meanwhile, worked as a food scientist for the U.S. Army and Ocean Spray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair had met on the Hill after Jamie asked her for help with homework in a food science course, which his dad had insisted he take; as Carolyn notes, it turned out to be more rigorous than he may have expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne night before an assignment was due, he couldn\u2019t reach the girls he usually relied on,\u201d she recalls with a chuckle. \u201cObviously, I wasn\u2019t impressed. But he grew on me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Their kids include two fellow alums, William Hintlian \u201921, MEng \u201922, and Katherine Hintlian \u201920.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carolyn became Teddie\u2019s technical director in 2016, overseeing food safety, quality control, and manufacturing operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made many changes in support of food safety and efficiency, but the ultimate value is in our Teddie formula and the fundamental way it\u2019s made,\u201d she says. \u201cYou won\u2019t find anyone here who wants to mess with the original.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

In 2020, when the pandemic hit, demand for staples like peanut butter spiked; the company ramped up, tripling production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back then, the Boston Globe<\/em> praised Teddie as \u201cone of the unsung companies called into action \u2026 to keep up with a peanut butter panic that had swept the nation and emptied supermarket shelves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teddie still produces just a few basic varieties: smooth and chunky, with no-salt organic versions of each, and a flaxseed option\u2014\u201cthere\u2019s a really strong, albeit small, fan base for that one,\u201d Jamie says\u2014as well as several mixed-nut products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand\u2019s aficionados, whom the company affectionately dubs \u201cTeddie Nation,\u201d include foodies, nutrition fanatics, and even Olympic athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you first open a jar, there\u2019ll be some degree of oil separation,\u201d Jamie notes. \u201cMy advice is, give it a really good stir. And when you think you\u2019ve stirred it enough, stir it a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
