Launched by a married couple, Napa Valley-based Sovi aims to offer all the taste of the grape\u2014with none of the alcohol<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As students on the Hill, Julia Eklund Littauer, MBA \u201920, and Alexander Littauer, MBA \u201920, enjoyed many social gatherings, drinking wine with friends and classmates\u2014evenings that perhaps, they eventually realized, involved a few too many libations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you hang out with other wine people, there\u2019s a bottle per person open on the table at any given time,\u201d says Julia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t thinking of going sober, but it\u2019s not a healthy way of living, and it doesn\u2019t feel good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple had come to the Johnson School together from the Napa Valley\u2014where they\u2019d met while working at a large wine company\u2014with the aim of doing something creative and entrepreneurial in the industry after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ultimately concluded that their desire for a healthier lifestyle dovetailed with a business opportunity: a line of non-alcoholic wines designed to taste as good as their potent counterparts.<\/p>\n<\/div>

After graduation, the Littauers founded Sovi<\/a>, which offers zero-proof versions of classics like a reserve red and a sparkling ros\u00e9, as well as more whimsical pours, such as its \u201cWild Child\u201d sparkling orange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNon-alcoholic wine means being able to socialize and drink wine, but not have the effects of alcohol,\u201d says Julia, who was president of the Johnson School\u2019s wine club and, along with her husband, participated in Cuv\u00e9e, Cornell\u2019s wine education and tasting group. \u201cThat was a refreshing idea that appealed to both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sovi offers zero-proof versions of classics like a reserve red and a sparkling ros\u00e9, as well as more whimsical pours, such as its ‘Wild Child’ sparkling orange.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Production of Sovi\u2019s libations begins with conventional wines from a family-owned vineyard in Northern California. As Julia notes, it\u2019s important to their process that the wine start out strongly flavored\u2014\u201cundrinkably\u201d so, she says\u2014because dealcoholization reduces flavor and body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she explains, Sovi differs from other brands that start with a wine that has a typical taste, then add sugar and flavorings to compensate for the loss\u2014a distinction that Wired<\/em> stressed in a review<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe best dealcoholized red wine is from Sovi,\u201d the publication says. \u201cUnlike many other NA wines, Sovi\u2019s grapes \u2026 are chosen with the intent to dealcoholize. This really makes a difference, because Sovi\u2019s two reds are without a doubt the best of this bunch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Julia explains, Sovi differs from other brands that start with a wine that has a typical taste, then add sugar and flavorings to compensate for the loss.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Sovi\u2019s bottled wines range in price from $32\u201342, with cans starting at $32 for a four-pack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can be purchased online or from independent retailers around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand has been covered in major media such as Cosmopolitan<\/em>, Forbes<\/em>, Tasting Table<\/em>, and the New York Times<\/em>, which put its Chenin Blanc on a 2023 list<\/a> of eight nonalcoholic wines for the Thanksgiving table\u2014noting it \u201cdelivers restrained fruit with flavors of Bosc pear and tart green grapes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when Sovi launched in 2020, the concept of non-alcoholic wines that could compete with conventional versions on taste\u2014especially in a world-renowned wine region like Napa\u2014had the founders \u201cbeing looked at like we had three heads,\u201d Julia recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Times<\/em> put its Chenin Blanc on a 2023 list of eight nonalcoholic wines for the Thanksgiving table\u2014noting it ‘delivers restrained fruit with flavors of Bosc pear and tart green grapes.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As Alexander observed on the Startup Cornell<\/em><\/a> podcast in 2022: \u201cI think, unfortunately, the category just didn\u2019t have a reputation for quality\u2014and, frankly, it was pretty well deserved. So it\u2019s been really interesting to see it now. One of my good friends who\u2019s a Master of Wine candidate is drinking Sovi.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a marketing class on the Hill, the pair had learned that non-alcoholic wine was trending in Europe\u2014and that surveys showed that Americans were choosing to drink less frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Littauers have a longtime love of wine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople want to be social and have wine with dinner or friends, but they have other priorities that they don\u2019t want alcohol conflicting with,\u201d Julia says. \u201cThey want to be clear minded, whether it\u2019s that night or the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half a decade in, the zero-proof movement has continued to gain traction\u2014with mocktails and non-alcoholic options commonly appearing on restaurant menus, and stores stocking more and more options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about inclusivity,\u201d says Julia. \u201cWhen others are enjoying an adult beverage, water doesn\u2019t cut it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
