In what to today\u2019s eyes may seem a startlingly grim assignment for three year olds, she and her classmates were asked to envision what it might be like to be a child in Korea who\u2019d been orphaned by then-ongoing war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo I painted unmatched clothes, just hanging on a clothesline,\u201d she recalls, \u201cbecause my feeling was they didn\u2019t have anything to wear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than seven decades later, Strongwater is an established artist who has enjoyed a long and varied career.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Her latest work is an evocative collection of stories\u2014crafted in images and prose\u2014of another deeply sobering theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jps.org\/books\/lost-synagogues-of-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Lost Synagogues of Europe<\/em><\/a><em>: Paintings and Histories<\/em> is the culmination of more than 15 years of research, writing, and artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In colorful detail and painstakingly compiled cultural histories, Strongwater tells the stories of 77 destroyed European synagogues, built from the early 1600s to 1930 across 16 countries, from Belarus to Croatia to Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>She describes the inception, growth, flourishing, and ultimately tragic fates of their Jewish congregations and communities, with most of the destruction spanning from the <em>Kristallnacht<\/em> (\u201cNight of Broken Glass\u201d) pogroms across Germany in 1938 through the end of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPre-WWII Jewish culture is brought to life in this rich illustrated tour of synagogues destroyed during the war,\u201d says a <em>Publishers Weekly <\/em>review<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe result is a worthy tribute to an important piece of Jewish history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The paintings, which Strongwater created on 8-by-10-inch paper using gouache (an opaque watercolor), depict a variety of structures: detailed and colorful wooden synagogues from the 1600s; elaborate late-1800s sanctuaries styled after churches, complete with bell towers; and multiple styles in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strongwater was able to find photographs and documentation of only a tiny fraction of the estimated 17,000 European synagogues that were destroyed before and during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>The book is the culmination of more than 15 years of research, writing, and artwork.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(In the decades following the war, some small Jewish communities have returned and constructed new synagogues in their place, but the vast majority are remembered only with a plaque or dedicated plaza, if at all.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the book\u2019s foreword, Ismar Schorsch, chancellor emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary, notes that although the subject matter is \u201cprofoundly melancholy,\u201d the volume is also highly instructive and uplifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAndrea\u2019s signature blending of architecture and history is not an epitaph for the synagogue,\u201d he writes, \u201cbut only for a stirring period of its multifaceted history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Strongwater\u2014who served as CALS\u2019 inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2025\/02\/andrea-strongwater-70-named-cals-first-artist-residence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artist-in-residence<\/a> in early 2025\u2014designed sets and costumes for theater and dance; she went on to create custom knitwear under her own label and illustrate three children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She first specialized in Jewish-themed artwork after she began licensing her paintings for calendars and greeting cards featuring holiday themes, scenes, and symbols. (She has also created Big Red-themed works, which can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellstore.com\/search?keywords=strongwater&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on puzzles<\/a> at the Cornell Store.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Andrea\u2019s signature blending of architecture and history is not an epitaph for the synagogue, but only for a stirring period of its multifaceted history.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Ismar Schorsch<\/strong>, chancellor emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for additional ideas, she came across a book that included reprinted postcards of long-vanished, early 20th-century European synagogues. You\u2019re it. You\u2019re the person doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strongwater began contacting staff at research centers, museums, seminaries, and reached out to Judaica collectors. She searched online for memoirs and artifacts; consulted sources like the <em>Encyclopedia Judaica<\/em> and the Jewish Virtual Library; and scoured auction sites for faded postcards and other documentation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I realized that I had to tell the story of these synagogues.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, she published an early look with her first 20 paintings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/14650780-where-we-once-gathered---lost-synagogues-of-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Where We Once Gathered<\/em><\/a><em>: Lost Synagogues of Europe<\/em>, packaged as a publication for younger readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new book\u2014released by the Jewish Publication Society and University of Nebraska Press\u2014includes 112 paintings of synagogue exteriors and some interiors, re-created in color from black-and-white postcards, rare photographs, and architectural drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure tragic histories, Strongwater says she ultimately found something positive and even heartening in the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t feel like documenting loss, because what I was finding was the stories,\u201d she says. \u201cAt the beginning, I cried a lot, because some of the stories are just so breathtakingly painful.
