A Lynah fixture for decades\u2014famed for the elaborate costumes he wore while resurfacing the ice\u2014has passed away at 84<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past few years, Dave Nulle was a quiet presence at Big Red men\u2019s ice hockey games\u2014watching through the boards of Lynah Rink, the gleam in his eye just a hint of his legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some four decades, he\u2019d been one of Lynah\u2019s most visible fixtures, a veritable celebrity. Nulle was the Zamboni Guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nulle\u2014who passed away in mid-October 2025 at age 84, after a long illness\u2014would have been the first to point out that it was not in fact a Zamboni, the brand name of a particular company\u2019s ice resurfacer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(He actually drove an Olympia; Lynah retired its Zamboni in 1982 when replacement parts became unavailable.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Nulle was an expert at resurfacing the ice between periods in one pass\u2014rarely needing to circle back to hit a spot he\u2019d missed\u2014he caught fans\u2019 imagination with his attire: an ever-changing array of costumes, from George Washington to Elvis to a circus clown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some four decades, Nulle was one of Lynah\u2019s most visible fixtures\u2014a veritable celebrity. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Despite his flamboyant on-ice persona, though, Nulle described himself as a private sort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDave has quietly gone about his business at the rink for many years,\u201d Mike Schafer \u201986, then head coach of the men\u2019s hockey team, observed back in 2009. \u201cWith his outfits, he has added to the game-night atmosphere in his own way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nulle traced his family\u2019s Cornell connections to the 1920s, when his grandfather sold athletic equipment to teams from his Collegetown sporting goods store under the motto \u201cOn the Hill\u2014But on the Level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a dance in the Straight, Nulle\u2019s mother, Claire Denise Couch \u201932, met Richard Nulle \u201933, a hockey player at a time when whole seasons could be cancelled if Beebe Lake didn\u2019t freeze solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nulle traced his family\u2019s Cornell connections to the 1920s, when his grandfather sold athletic equipment to teams from his Collegetown sporting goods store under the motto ‘On the Hill\u2014But on the Level.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Nulle was born in NYC, but when his father died in 1949, he and his mother returned to Ithaca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI began not as a Zamboni guy,\u201d Nulle told Cornell Alumni Magazine<\/em> a decade and a half ago, \u201cbut just as a guy who moved nets around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When his predecessor retired in the \u201980s, Nulle and another staffer got behind the wheel. \u201cWe already knew how,\u201d Nulle said, \u201cbut it\u2019s different when you drive for the big games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The daring dress-up that made Nulle the stuff of Lynah legend began, he said, with a hat\u2014\u201ca sort of Russian babushka.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student reached over and grabbed it off his head as he drove by, Nulle recalled, and \u201cthe whole rink began to shout, \u2018Give it back!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The daring dress-up that made Nulle the stuff of Lynah legend began, he said, with a hat\u2014’a sort of Russian babushka.’<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That inspired a student to ask Nulle to wear a tuxedo for the Harvard game, infamous for its intense rivalry and flying fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nulle agreed, eventually amassing a collection of more than 250 hats, coats, boots, swords, and other accessories and attire. With Nulle at the wheel, Lynah fans cheered him as everything from Napoleon to an Egyptian pharaoh to a medieval knight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve created a very sophisticated fan base,\u201d Nulle once observed with a laugh. “Their demand is high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as his obituary<\/a> notes, his passion for performance extended beyond Lynah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was a juggler. He was an accomplished dancer who taught ballroom dancing and ice skating. Who will forget his a cappella<\/em> performances of Irish folk songs? He was a beloved member of Ithaca\u2019s international and Israeli folk dance community, where he both taught and participated. He was a sought-after dance partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nulle eventually amassed a collection of more than 250 hats, coats, boots, swords, and other accessories and attire. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The current head coach of the Big Red men\u2019s team, Casey Jones \u201990, is no Lynah newcomer\u2014having been both a player and an assistant coach\u2014and remembers Nulle fondly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was part of the lore of Lynah,\u201d he says, \u201canother one of the characters, a big piece of the atmosphere, with his fancy hats and extravagant dress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Nulle once explained, while some of his getups were gifts, he bought many himself\u2014scouring vintage shops, second-hand stores, even Renaissance fairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like being a local celebrity\u2014people shake your hand, shout \u2018Hey Dave!\u2019 on the street, buy you a drink, want to get a photograph with you,\u201d he reflected. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun job driving that machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
