Opened in fall 1945, the School of Industrial and Labor Relations was founded to address the great workplace conflicts of the era, and to promote better labor-management relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilr.cornell.edu\/news\/about-ilr\/ilr-80-audacious-idea-humble-beginnings-worldwide-legacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Celebrating its 80th birthday<\/a> this year, ILR has become a global leader in the study of labor, management, and the economy. Despite competing proposals from Syracuse University and Union College, his bill passed two years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ives was appointed ILR\u2019s first dean, serving from 1945\u201347. As he was still a member of the legislature, he declined a salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>It opened (oddly) in the month of November!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ILR School\u2014and Cornell itself\u2014started the academic year six weeks later than usual. In 1949, as the library grew, it established the Labor-Management Documentation Center, which would later become the renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/catherwood.library.cornell.edu\/kheel\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kheel Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" school\u2019s second year, most of its administrative and faculty offices moved into barracks and a Quonset hut\u2014located on the future Engineering Quad\u2014that had housed World War II training locale, despite the leaking roofs and hallways dotted with pails to catch the dripping water, because it helped to build broad friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter life!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the \u201cbus-riding\u201d course, it took students into factories, mines, and other workplaces in New York and Pennsylvania, becoming an educational staple of rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>The first female cabinet member taught there!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. labor secretary for 12 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/frances-perkins-honored\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frances Perkins<\/a> was the architect of legislation\u2014unemployment compensation, Social Security, child labor laws, and the 40-hour work week\u2014that vastly altered U.S. work culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the \u201cmother of the New Deal,\u201d Perkins was a visiting lecturer from 1957 until her death in 1965.
