Monique Hall \u201914 won an Emmy for writing for the beloved children\u2019s show\u2014one of many she has worked on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was a kid who always loved stories,\u201d says Monique Hall \u201914. \u201cI was engaged by anything that let me experience life through someone else\u2019s eyes, and see experiences different from my own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Hall is a writer and producer of children\u2019s TV shows\u2014helping to create the same kind of thought-provoking entertainment for the current generation of kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hall\u2019s screenwriting credits<\/a> include episodes of PBS\u2019s \u201cSesame Street\u201d and \u201cDaniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood\u201d as well as Nickelodeon\u2019s \u201cBubble Guppies\u201d and \u201cButterbean\u2019s Cafe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

She has also served as story editor on more than two dozen episodes of PBS\u2019s \u201cLyla in the Loop,\u201d an animated series that aims to make computer science more accessible to kids, through tales about a seven-year-old girl and her family who work together to solve everyday problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love telling good stories for children that are meaningful and fun and don\u2019t talk down to them, while teaching,\u201d says Hall, who majored in human development in Human Ecology with minors in creative writing and film from Arts & Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, Hall and her \u201cSesame Street\u201d colleagues won an Emmy for outstanding writing for a preschool or children\u2019s live action program. It was Hall\u2019s fifth Emmy nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work on the beloved PBS show includes the episode \u201cWash Day,\u201d in which the character Gabrielle has her hair done by her aunt, who combs, shampoos, conditions, and detangles it for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a little Black girl, there\u2019s a very specific way for a hair-washing routine,\u201d says Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was something that I don\u2019t think had been seen on TV in that way before, so it made it all the more special. I would have loved to see that when I was a kid, and it was so sweet to see kids and adults react to watching it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child of immigrants from Jamaica, Hall says she faced early expectations to choose a stable and conventional career, like medicine\u2014but while taking a screenwriting class as a sophomore, she found her calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hall’s work on ‘Sesame Street’ includes an episode in which the character Gabrielle has her hair washed. ‘It was something that I don\u2019t think had been seen on TV in that way before,’ she says, ‘so it made it all the more special.’ <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, she worked in educational technology for a few years before getting a master\u2019s in education from Harvard with a specialization in educational media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also landed an internship at Boston\u2019s PBS station, followed by a fellowship at Sesame Workshop, the NYC-based nonprofit behind \u201cSesame Street.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Sesame fellowship let me prove to myself this was the right path for me,\u201d says Hall. \u201cAnd to end up writing for \u2018Sesame Street\u2019 is so special. I grew up watching it. It\u2019s a legendary show, and the characters are amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Having written for PBS since 2019, Hall is now slated to serve as head writer and executive producer for the forthcoming second season of “Lyla in the Loop.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really try to do right by all of my characters,\u201d she observes. \u201cKids should see themselves reflected in what they consume, and they should see themselves being loved and cared for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
