Weinberg\u2019s first paper\u2014<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3706598.3714102\"><em>Why So Serious?<\/em><\/a><em>: Exploring Timely Humorous Comments in AAC Through AI-Powered Interfaces<\/em>\u2014won the best paper honorable mention and jury best demo award at the prestigious Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Weinberg is exploring how artificial intelligence can enhance the technologies that he and more than two million Americans with speech disabilities use to communicate.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are highly coveted commendations, according to his adviser, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tech.cornell.edu\/people\/thijs-roumen\/\">Thijs Roumen<\/a>, an assistant professor at Cornell Tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTobi really is a trailblazer,\u201d says Roumen, who has a joint appointment in the Bowers College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been developing technology while also using the technology, which changes the way it\u2019s shaped and the way we reflect on it. But when he arrived at Cornell Tech for a summer internship in 2022, he didn\u2019t know what a PhD was and did not see it in his future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wendy Ju, an associate professor at Cornell Tech, encouraged Weinberg to apply for the doctoral program after completing his bachelor\u2019s in mechanical engineering at the Technion\u2013Israel Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>AI is a very wonderful but dangerous technology, especially if it mediates everything we say as AAC users.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, he joined Roumen\u2019s lab, intending to work on digital fabrication. But Roumen encouraged Weinberg, as he does all students, to find a project he really cared about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI told Thijs, there was this other thing I really care about, but neither of us has any experience with it,\u201d Weinberg writes. \u201cHe was on board to give it a try, and here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Weinberg hopes to reframe AAC\u2014not as a workaround for missing speech, but as a medium of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis vision represents a step toward the broader goal of enabling AAC users to fully participate in spoken communication,\u201d he writes, \u201cand to flourish in society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Tobias Weinberg (left) at Cornell Tech with his advisor, Thijs Roumen.
