Times <\/em>reporter Molly O\u2019Toole \u201909 is currently tracing a 9,000-mile route to the U.S.\u2019s southern border<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Journalist Molly O\u2019Toole \u201909 is spending the next several months following what is believed to be the longest active human migration route on the planet. The project, which she aims to chronicle in a book, will trace the path taken by refugees through South and Central America and Mexico to the U.S. border, stretching approximately 9,000 miles through 10 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are people who are coming from all over the world,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd then, starting in Brazil and Ecuador, they essentially walk or ride\u2014on buses, boats, trains\u2014all the way north. Times<\/em> two years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, O\u2019Toole co-won <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2020\/05\/alumna-receives-pulitzers-newest-prize-audio-reporting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first Pulitzer for audio journalism<\/a> for an episode of \u201cThis American Life\u201d titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/688\/the-out-crowd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Out Crowd<\/a>,\u201d which investigated the impacts of the Trump Administration\u2019s \u201cremain in Mexico\u201d policy\u2014on both asylum seekers and immigration officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She returned to the Hill in fall 2021, spending the semester as the <a href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/public-engagement\/distinguished-visiting-journalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zubrow Distinguished Visiting Journalist Fellow<\/a> in the College of Arts and Sciences\u2014teaching an American studies class on U.S. immigration policy and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2021\/11\/visiting-journalist-humanizes-immigration-issue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">giving several talks<\/a>.
