L.A. Times <\/em>reporter Molly O\u2019Toole \u201909 is currently tracing a 9,000-mile route to the U.S.\u2019s southern border<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Molly O\u2019Toole \u201909 is spending the next several months following what is believed to be the longest active human migration route on the planet. The project, which she aims to chronicle in a book, will trace the path taken by refugees through South and Central America and Mexico to the U.S. border, stretching approximately 9,000 miles through 10 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese are people who are coming from all over the world,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd then, starting in Brazil and Ecuador, they essentially walk or ride\u2014on buses, boats, trains\u2014all the way north. They\u2019re crossing more than a dozen countries and thousands of miles along these networks, formal and informal, that span the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For O\u2019Toole\u2014a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter currently on sabbatical from her job covering immigration and national security<\/a> for the L.A. Times\u2014<\/em>exploring this global trek is, in many ways, a way to unite the strands of what has been her life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transcending borders<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in San Diego, O\u2019Toole recalls, she could see into Mexico from the hills near her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her early questions\u2014about the seemingly arbitrary line between the two countries, and how lives are shaped simply by being born on one side or the other\u2014sparked a lifelong interest in exploring issues around immigration, refugees, and asylum-seekers, and telling the uniquely human stories behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After majoring in English on the Hill\u2014she began her reporting career at the Daily Sun<\/em> and interned at Cornell Alumni Magazine<\/em>\u2014O\u2019Toole earned a dual master\u2019s degree in journalism and international relations at NYU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has written for the Washington Post<\/em>, the Atlantic<\/em>, the New Republic<\/em>, Newsweek,<\/em> Foreign Policy,<\/em> and the Associated Press\u2014reporting from Central America, West Africa, the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, and South Asia. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She covered the 2016 U.S. presidential election for Foreign Policy<\/em> and joined the L.A. Times<\/em> two years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, O\u2019Toole co-won the first Pulitzer for audio journalism<\/a> for an episode of \u201cThis American Life\u201d titled \u201cThe Out Crowd<\/a>,\u201d which investigated the impacts of the Trump Administration\u2019s \u201cremain in Mexico\u201d policy\u2014on both asylum seekers and immigration officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She returned to the Hill in fall 2021, spending the semester as the Zubrow Distinguished Visiting Journalist Fellow<\/a> in the College of Arts and Sciences\u2014teaching an American studies class on U.S. immigration policy and giving several talks<\/a>. (She also took a Spanish class to bolster her fluency in preparation for her current travels.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A global journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Toole spoke to Cornellians<\/em> from Mexico in late January, as she was beginning her research. (The book will be published by a subsidiary of Penguin Random House, likely in 2024.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She notes that no journalist has yet reported on the full scope of this migration path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have Eritreans, Ethiopians, Cameroonians, Bangladeshis, Indians, Nepalis\u2014people from all over the world\u2014using this route,\u201d she says, “mingling with the groups that most of the American public traditionally associates with immigration: Central Americans and Mexicans.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Toole plans to spotlight individual stories of refugees and asylum-seekers\u2014some of whom are fleeing from what she calls \u201ca deadly cocktail of poverty, climate change, government corruption, and more\u201d\u2014while painting a detailed picture of the interplay of politics, immigration policy, and other factors that have made this harrowing journey so crucial to so many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route taken by some migrants\u2014who may originate in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, or Asia\u2014can range from 9,500 to 20,000 miles and last years. Many have leveraged homes or land, or taken on significant debt, to travel via guides and traffickers; they also face the threat of theft, assault, and kidnapping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cObviously, I\u2019m coming from a position of immense privilege,\u201d O\u2019Toole says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m going to get as close as I can to really understand what people go through along this route, and why they\u2019d put themselves through this for just a chance\u2014and not a high chance\u2014of being able to stay in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As O\u2019Toole notes, climate change\u2014causing droughts and crop failures, and often displacing populations into areas already suffering civil strife\u2014is an increasing factor in human migration patterns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, asylum laws\u2014most dating to the post-World War II period and crafted with Europeans in mind\u2014are poorly suited for today\u2019s migration challenges; for example, while many Central Americans are fleeing horrific violence, their cases often don\u2019t fit the laws\u2019 current criteria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe right to claim asylum\u2014not to win it, but to claim it\u2014is enshrined in U.S. law,\u201d O\u2019Toole observes. \u201cPeople may think, \u2018This is something we can solve later.\u2019 But there are hundreds of thousands of people on their way along this route, stuck at various points\u2014and there are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, at the border right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
