Do you want to make me homesick?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also complains about the food at the three-day <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/earle-orientation-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freshman Camp<\/a>, a precursor to Orientation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(\u201cJust awful. Real mush. The men, she recalled, carried signs and torches, threw eggs, and burned an effigy of Cornell president Deane Waldo Malott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Linda\u2019s undergrad experience was shaped by the conservative \u201950s\u2014with student life governed by curfews, dress codes, and dorm rules steeped in the era of \u2018gracious living.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstration made national news\u2014and led to several suspensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoy, has there been a lot of excitement around this place! I\u2019ve enclosed some articles from our own paper so that you can have an idea of the background of the whole mess,\u201d Linda wrote in a lengthy letter home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe faculty is mostly on our side. Suzannah\u2019s daughter, Eleanor Creedon \u201924, had matriculated into Arts &amp; Sciences in fall 2020, in the midst of the pandemic that so altered the student experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would tell my grandmother about doing Orientation, attending classes, and taking part in other traditions via Zoom\u2014a stark contrast to her tenure at Cornell,\u201d Eleanor recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut because of the stories I heard over the years from my mother and grandmother, I was able to visualize what life at Cornell would look like in a non-pandemic world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Photo illustration by Ashley Osburn \/ Cornell University.
