<strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">As he was officially installed as Cornell University\u2019s 15th president on October 24 during a ceremony in Barton Hall, Mike Kotlikoff echoed the words of the late Dale Corson\u2014another provost turned president\u2014in 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corson said that \u201che felt no need to be installed, having been doing the job already for a while, in a place where he had spent so many years as a faculty member, an administrator, and a parent,\u201d Kotlikoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img noting that the year 2025 marks the University\u2019s 160th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn fact, my father, Peter Meinig [\u201961, BME \u201962]\u2014who served as this board\u2019s chairman from 2002\u201311\u2014summed it up perfectly when he spoke at the inauguration of President Lehman, right here in Barton Hall in 2003, and described Cornell as \u2018a university whose soul is as beautiful as its campus.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It has been through multiple generations of loving service by our presidents, leadership, faculty, staff, students, and alumni that Cornell has become the world-renowned research university it is today.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Anne Meinig Smalling \u201987<\/strong>, chair of the Board of Trustees<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob Harrison \u201976, the board\u2019s emeritus chair, offered a toast, lauding Kotlikoff for his 25 years on the Hill as a professor, department chair, dean, and then the longest-serving provost in Cornell\u2019s history (2015\u201324) before stepping into the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2024\/07\/scholarship-kid-president-kotlikoff-meets-moment\">role of interim president<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provosts rarely go on to become presidents of the same university, Harrison noted, because they typically have to make a multitude of unpopular administrative decisions and balance competing academic interests and decent Mike has been as their boss,\u201d Harrison said, thanking Kotlikoff for his \u201ctruly extraordinary leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rick Cerione, professor in the colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Arts &amp; Sciences, spoke about the evolution of the life sciences and genomic initiatives on the Hill after Kotlikoff came on board in 2000 to lead the veterinary college\u2019s then-new Department of Biomedical Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Every dean with whom I have spoken during his tenure has told me how fair, straightforward, and decent Mike has been as their boss.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Bob Harrison \u201976<\/strong>, emeritus chair of the Board of Trustees<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Cerione recounted Kotlikoff\u2019s initiatives as provost on radical collaboration and the recruitment of additional top-tier scientists to the University, as well as how he inspired the creation of the new <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/centerforimmunology.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell Center for Immunology<\/a> to bridge research at the Ithaca and Weill Cornell Medicine campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Emeritus Glenn Altschuler, PhD \u201976, who served with Kotlikoff as a fellow dean and later reported to him as provost, praised him \u201cfor his intelligence, integrity, candor, compassion, decisiveness, and decency,\u201d but also offered a slew of humorous quotes on leadership to guide Kotlikoff as \u201cIt is absolutely essential that faculty members be free to evaluate everything,\u201d and the proverb \u201cIf you want to go quickly, go alone.
