There are no other rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like a dark-roasted morning cup of java to jolt your body\u2019s engines, the Coffee Club is a robust Sunday afternoon congregation of students from an array of disciplines. It\u2019s their chance to escape academic rigor and wind down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this gathering is not about your grandfather\u2019s grocery-shelf coffee. Members weigh the coffee and measure the water to ensure accurate ratios, and each week becomes a new adventure in taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Members meet in a Goldwin Smith Hall classroom\u2014just a waft away from the Temple of Zeus caf\u00e9\u2014and sample beans from all over the coffee-growing world.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since factors like a bean\u2019s species, the soil it was grown in, and how it was roasted all play a role, tasters often rely on a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/notbadcoffee.com\/flavor-wheel-en\/\">flavor wheel<\/a> to describe the senses. Engineering majors talk to Hotelies, musicians converse with environmental science students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt really is a community. It\u2019s a very relaxed club,\u201d says Yu, a biological sciences major in CALS. \u201cA lot of people come just to chat with people they normally would not meet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It\u2019s such a different experience from what people normally have with coffee. I think that\u2019s why so many people sign up.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Ethan Yu \u201927<\/strong>, co-president<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Yarbrough, a doctoral student in music performance, serves as the club\u2019s brewmaster. Arguably, he knows coffee like a sommelier knows wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He began roasting it in high school in Alabama, when a friend brought him to a Birmingham coffee shop to try specialized, single-cup brews. Unable to afford several hundred dollars for a bean roaster, the resourceful then-teen used his parents\u2019 electric hot-air popcorn popper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI did this all in our basement,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhen you\u2019re roasting coffee, it doesn\u2019t fly out like popcorn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Yarbrough eventually bought a roaster\u2014which resembles a tabletop chicken rotisserie, but with a cage full of beans.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in the fall 2025 semester, the Cornell club sampled El Diviso Ombligon from Colombia\u2019s Huila Region; <em>ombligon<\/em> is Spanish for belly button, as the dimpled coffee bean resembles a human navel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/2025_1392_RY_0264-A-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Jeffrey Huang pours coffee during a meeting of the Cornell Coffee Club in Goldwin Smith Hall on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
