Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rit.edu\/directory\/japfaa-james-perkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the faculty<\/a> at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he directs the MFA program in medical illustration; It has to be attractive\u2014because an illustration isn\u2019t very much good if nobody wants to look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It\u2019s teaching and problem solving with pictures.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Perkins enjoyed childhood doodling and high school art classes, he never planned on a career as an illustrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While double majoring in biology and geology in Arts &amp; Sciences, he developed an interest in vertebrate paleontology that led him to class=\"wp-element-caption\">Perkins aims for his illustrations to be both instructive and visually appealing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There, he snagged the last open seat in an anatomy class that had piqued his curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the first time I was exposed to medical illustrations,\u201d Perkins recalls. \u201cAnd this was happening at the same time that I was having doubts about completing the PhD.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He switched gears from his doctoral work, took some drawing classes, and was accepted into RIT\u2019s medical illustration program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">It has to be attractive\u2014because an illustration isn\u2019t very much good if nobody wants to look at it. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not happy doing what you\u2019re doing, don\u2019t be afraid to branch out,\u201d he observes. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to jump at some new opportunity, even if it\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before joining the faculty at his graduate alma mater\u2014where he also teaches classes on scientific visualization, surgical illustration, and anatomy\u2014Perkins worked for an Atlanta-based company that creates courtroom exhibits for lawyers arguing cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, and product liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"
