On the faculty at RIT, award-winning medical illustrator Jim Perkins \u201984, BA \u201985, creates visuals for top textbooks and more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threading a catheter into the pulmonary artery is a delicate process\u2014one that\u2019s important for many physicians to learn. As a medical illustrator, Jim Perkins \u201984, BA \u201985, combines his artistic talents and scientific knowledge to make the steps clear and comprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

It\u2019s one of thousands of his illustrations that appear in some 100 textbooks used around the world\u2014helping students from undergrad onward understand biological processes, clinical concepts, anatomical structures, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI create visual media to communicate complex medical information,\u201d explains Perkins, who produces artwork for books and scholarly articles across a variety of fields including anatomy, pathology, physiology, neuroscience, oncology, and histology. \u201cIt\u2019s teaching and problem solving with pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perkins is the sole or main illustrator of several editions of top medical textbooks such as Netter’s Atlas of Neuroscience<\/em>,\u00a0Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology<\/em>, and\u00a0Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s also on the faculty<\/a> at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he directs the MFA program in medical illustration; he\u2019s a 1992 alum of the program, one of only five of its kind offered in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perkins has received some of his field\u2019s top honors, including the British Medical Association\u2019s Illustrated Book Award and the Association of Medical Illustrators\u2019 Br\u00f6del Award for Excellence in Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most important objective is clarity, making sure an illustration effectively communicates the concept,\u201d says Perkins, who creates his visuals using computer software after conducting research on the topic. \u201cThe other part is beauty. It has to be attractive\u2014because an illustration isn\u2019t very much good if nobody wants to look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s teaching and problem solving with pictures.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Although Perkins enjoyed childhood doodling and high school art classes, he never planned on a career as an illustrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While double majoring in biology and geology in Arts & Sciences, he developed an interest in vertebrate paleontology that led him to pursue a PhD in the field at the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, he snagged the last open seat in an anatomy class that had piqued his curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the first time I was exposed to medical illustrations,\u201d Perkins recalls. \u201cAnd this was happening at the same time that I was having doubts about completing the PhD.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He switched gears from his doctoral work, took some drawing classes, and was accepted into RIT\u2019s medical illustration program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has to be attractive\u2014because an illustration isn\u2019t very much good if nobody wants to look at it. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not happy doing what you\u2019re doing, don\u2019t be afraid to branch out,\u201d he observes. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to jump at some new opportunity, even if it\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before joining the faculty at his graduate alma mater\u2014where he also teaches classes on scientific visualization, surgical illustration, and anatomy\u2014Perkins worked for an Atlanta-based company that creates courtroom exhibits for lawyers arguing cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, and product liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since they had to be understood by jurors with no medical or scientific background, he notes, the experience helped him learn to create visuals for different audiences\u2014lessons that still serve him well today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy job is to ask what I can do to teach them,\u201d he says of his viewers, \u201cso everybody can learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
