They reside one floor beneath, in vaults within a crypt that\u2019s sealed by a three-by-five-foot stone slab weighing more than 700 pounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>The actual remains reside one floor beneath the antechapel, in vaults within a crypt that\u2019s sealed by a three-by-five-foot stone slab weighing more than 700 pounds.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The antechapel was added to the building\u2019s north face in 1883\u201384, nearly a decade after Sage opened. Funded both by the University and the estate of Jennie McGraw Fiske, it was dedicated in memory of Ezra, Jennie, and her father, trustee and benefactor John McGraw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tablet bearing their names, embedded into an exterior wall, was unveiled by a future U.S. president: Grover Cleveland, then governor of New York. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" White.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"swiper-pagination\"><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He spoke of the course of higher education,&#8221; the <em>Daily Sun<\/em> reported of his remarks, &#8220;and testified to the ennobling influence of those whose memory the chapel will commemorate, and of lives similar to theirs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous stained-glass windows adorn the antechapel&#8217;s walls\u2014depicting notable Cornellians, the founders of other universities, and a variety of 19th-century scholars and educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> Directly beneath the north window is a recumbent figure of Ezra Cornell in white marble, of heroic size.<\/p>\n<cite><em><strong>Cornell University: A History<\/strong><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ridge of the slate room is surmounted by an iron cresting,\u201d <em>Cornell University: A History<\/em> notes. &#8220;The chapel measures inside 20 feet in width by 32 feet in length. The inside walls up to the window sills are of Ohio stone. The remainder of the interior walls is of yellow brick. His remains were moved to the completed antechapel, where his wife, Mary Ann Wood Cornell, is also interred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to John McGraw and Jennie McGraw Fiske, the crypt\u2019s occupants include Jennie\u2019s husband (Willard Fiske, the University\u2019s librarian) and Ezra\u2019s eldest son, Alonzo Cornell, a former governor of New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Ezra had originally been buried at Ithaca City Cemetery; his remains were moved to the completed antechapel.<br><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three presidents reside there\u2014the first, Andrew Dickson White, and the fifth and sixth, Edmund Ezra Day and Deane Waldo Malott\u2014as do some of their family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The antechapel above is also home to one of the University\u2019s most beloved ghostly legends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
