Kim Moffitt Hehir \u201994 and her sister experienced that first-hand with Brutus, their 135-pound mixed-breed rescue dog, whom they kept happily running around the house into his later years on a diet including bone broth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are so many benefits to it, like amino acids and many vitamins and minerals,\u201d says Hehir, a Hotelie. \u201cIt helps naturally detoxify, and broth they regularly fed Brutus was homemade. The process\u2014which involves boiling animal bones for hours, until they begin to break down\u2014is labor-intensive, but they\u2019d found no pet-safe alternative on the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? As Hehir explains, bone broths made for human consumption often have high levels of sodium, as well as seasonings\u2014like garlic and onion\u2014that can be toxic to dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There are so many benefits to it, like amino acids and many vitamins and minerals. It helps naturally detoxify, and it\u2019s great for hydration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So in 2017, Hehir and her sister were inspired to cofound <a href=\"https:\/\/brutusbroth.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brutus Bone Broth<\/a>, a pet food and treat brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its nutrient-infused broths (priced at about $10 for 32 ounces) can be given as a meal topper to tempt picky eaters; incorporated into homemade pet food recipes; served alone as a treat; or frozen to make an enrichment toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Flavors include beef, chicken, and pork, and there are formulas to protect hips and joints and to promote skin and coat health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broth comes in liquid form\u2014in cartons that are refrigerated after opening\u2014or powdered in on-the-go sticks (about $2 each) that are mixed with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Its treats include broth-infused biscuits (about $10 for an eight-ounce bag) and turkey-flavored \u201cbrothcicles\u201d (about $10 for six) that are served frozen, like ice pops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And beyond broth, a newly introduced goat milk meal topper (about $9 for 16 ounces) is designed to support gut heath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Hehir explains, the company\u2019s broths are human grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><figure including Petco, PetSmart, Walmart, Target, and Wegmans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/guides\/guide-to-traveling-with-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">been featured<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, whose Wirecutter product-recommendation site cited its to-go packets in an \u201cultimate guide to traveling with your pet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide has-text-align-center\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:0px\"><blockquote><p>As Hehir explains, bone broths magazine included Brutus on its 2023 list of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S., at number 373.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people don\u2019t just want to give their dog a treat,\u201d observes Hehir, who previously worked as head of strategy for a luxury hotel company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey want it to do something positive for them\u2014just like they may not want to eat something that many of its products are suitable for other species, including cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA wildlife rescue is using our goat milk to feed their baby squirrels,\u201d Hehir says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She adds: \u201cGetting testimonials that we have changed animals\u2019 lives is my favorite part of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is based in Miami, where Hehir lives with her husband (Sean Hehir \u201996), children, and golden retriever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of working, hunting, and military dogs that love our bone broth because they don\u2019t want to drink water when they\u2019re amped up and working,\u201d Hehir observes. \u201cOur bone broth is like Gatorade for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<em>All
