Shelby Holland \u201918 and Laura Holland \u201922 like to joke that while some parents don\u2019t allow their kids to watch TV, in their household they \u201cprobably watched too much of it.\u201d Over family dinners, the sisters would dissect the shows they were viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

After they grew up and were living in different cities, they\u2019d call each other to chat about all things entertainment-related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, the duo launched a podcast, Sisters Who Watch<\/em><\/a>, to let the rest of the world listen in on their weekly reviews, banter, and hot takes of the latest shows, movies, reality TV, sports, concerts, and other events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show boasts more than 125 episodes and thousands of streams on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Topics they\u2019ve covered so far in 2025 include the reality dating show \u201cLove Island,\u201d the HBO drama \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d the Marvel movie Thunderbolts*,<\/em> Super Bowl LIX, and festivals like Coachella and Cannes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also do round-ups\u2014like the year\u2019s best TV movies and shows or the season\u2019s most anticipated offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur tastes are very diverse, and we try to go between scripted and unscripted content,\u201d says Shelby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough it all, we like to bring our perspectives as young Black women; the podcast is warm, funny, and conversational.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sisters Who Watch<\/em> sometimes features guests, such as fellow podcasters or TV cast members like Charrisse Jackson Jordan (from \u201cThe Real Housewives of Potomac\u201d) and Caress Russell (on the competition show \u201cThe Circle,\u201d she played under the fake online profile of her brother, singer Paul Russell \u201919<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Hollands started the podcast after both found themselves laid off from their jobs in the same year\u2014Shelby from Netflix, Laura from Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a blessing in disguise, because it gave us the time to build out the podcast and attend conferences,\u201d says Shelby, who majored in history on the Hill, where she was president of the historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like to say I had a season of underemployment, and used that time to get closer to my passion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelby ultimately landed a job at Nice Crowd, a live events company that specializes in film and comedy festivals; Laura works for the federal government as a paralegal while exploring opportunities in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sisters belong to a multigenerational Cornellian family\u2014tracing back to their grandfather, Jerome Holland \u201939, MS \u201941<\/a>. Known as “Brud,” he was a star football player who went on to be a trustee and University Councilor; his distinguished career included serving as a college president and as U.S. ambassador to Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Cornellian relatives include their dad, Joseph Holland \u201978, MA \u201979<\/a>, an author, activist, attorney, and entrepreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Laura based in San Francisco and Shelby in L.A., their podcast is primarily recorded remotely. The majority of their listeners, they say, are also young women\u2014something they lean into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShelby and I have always been close, but we talk even more regularly now, and it\u2019s definitely added a lot of fun to our relationship,\u201d says Laura, an ILR alum who was president of the pre-law fraternity Kappa Alpha Pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhenever we see each other, we always go see movies\u2014and if we\u2019re going to see each other soon, we\u2019ll wait to watch certain things until we\u2019re together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
