{"id":58042,"date":"2025-09-12T11:03:40","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T15:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=58042"},"modified":"2025-09-14T08:52:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T12:52:37","slug":"morse-ajc-print","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/morse-ajc-print\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I Love Print, but I Love Journalism More&#8217;: Meet Andrew Morse \u201996"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A conversation with the <em>Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em> publisher and former <em>Daily Sun<\/em> editor, whose newspaper will soon be digital-only<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Beth Saulnier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><em>The <\/em>New York Times<em> headline summed it up neatly: \u201c<\/em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/\">Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a><em> to Quit Print Cold Turkey.\u201d After nearly a century and a half, it reported in late August, the venerable Southern daily would stop producing a print edition at the end of 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The shift\u2014discontinuing print all at once, rather than reducing its frequency, as have other papers\u2014made headlines far beyond the <\/em>Times<em>. And at the center of those stories was the journalist who ultimately owns the decision: the paper\u2019s publisher, Andrew Morse \u201996.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A former government major in Arts &amp; Sciences who served as editor-in-chief of the <\/em>Daily Sun<em>, Morse got his professional start at ABC News, where he spent 15 years. Prior to joining the Atlanta paper, he was head of U.S. television for Bloomberg and held several positions at CNN, rising to executive vice president and chief digital officer for CNN Worldwide.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>In spring 2023, Morse returned to the Hill as a <\/i><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-style: italic\" href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/public-engagement\/distinguished-visiting-journalists\">Zubrow Distinguished Visiting Journalist<\/a><em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/public-engagement\/distinguished-visiting-journalists\"> <\/a>in <em><em>Arts &amp; Sciences<\/em><\/em><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>How tough a decision was this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I started at the <em>AJC<\/em> in January 2023, there was a plan in place to stop printing the paper six months later. I put the brakes on that, because I didn\u2019t think we had a viable digital product\u2014and we have devoted ourselves for the last two years to building up a really robust one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over that time, we\u2019ve grown at a pace greater than the rest of the industry: we\u2019ve grown digital subscribers 35% and digital revenue 22%. And the best way to do that is to let go of anything that\u2019s holding us back from investing in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Were you surprised it made headlines in other publications?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn\u2019t, for two reasons. One, the <em>AJC<\/em> is an important institution, and people look to us. And two, we\u2019re doing something that hasn\u2019t been done yet, and taking a bold step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are print publications that are, sadly, managing decline\u2014that have cut print or reduced its frequency to save money. This is the opposite: it\u2019s an organization with a long-range growth strategy that\u2019s investing heavily and producing digital results.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I wasn\u2019t really surprised. And it was encouraging that I heard from the publishers of at least a half-dozen major metro news organizations saying, \u201cThanks for leading the charge. This makes good sense for journalism and for the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>It seems obvious, but why is digital a better way to share information than a process that starts with cutting down trees?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440. And the fact is, printing newspapers, putting them on delivery trucks, wrapping them in plastic bags, and driving them to people\u2019s doorsteps\u2014it hasn\u2019t been the most effective way to distribute the news in a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There are print publications that are, sadly, managing decline\u2014that have cut print or reduced its frequency to save money. This is the opposite.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What I keep saying to our subscribers, the community, and others in the industry is: \u201cI love print, but I love journalism more.\u201d And the reality is, it\u2019s not the medium\u2014the actual paper\u2014we\u2019re attached to. It\u2019s the journalism. This decision will enable us to invest all our money in the journalism and the best delivery system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>In the online age, how have the priorities around producing the print paper already changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re a fully digital organization\u2014we just take some of that output and curate it in a newspaper. All of our original journalism shows up on our app, website, newsletters, and podcasts\u2014and then, frankly, we take the best of what we do and put in the paper the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Are you concerned about the potential impact on ad revenue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not. It\u2019s one of the things that we\u2019ve allowed to hold us back, out of fear\u2014when the best thing we can do is offer modern, digital, and targeted advertising solutions. All the companies we work with want to reach their customers, who are living in a digital world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> The reality is, it\u2019s not the medium\u2014the actual paper\u2014we\u2019re attached to. It\u2019s the journalism.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>How much pushback have you had from print subscribers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve received a number of lovely, thoughtful, emotional notes\u2014and every note I get, I respond to. I know it\u2019s sad; it\u2019s a part of people\u2019s daily habits. Many of them have subscribed to the <em>AJC<\/em> for decades. This will be a major change, and they feel emotional about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I totally understand that. What I say to them is: \u201cI want our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to have the same emotional connection to the <em>AJC<\/em> and to our journalism as you do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>You spent a lot of your time on the Hill at the <em>Daily<\/em> <em>Sun<\/em>\u2014which didn\u2019t even have a website until a year after you graduated. What was it like to put out the paper back then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was old school. We were still in the business of cutting and pasting stories onto flats, then dropping them off at the printer. Finally, my senior year, we got what we call electronic pagination, so we could at least lay out some pages on a computer\u2014but we still needed to physically cut and paste with X-acto knives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a bustling and thriving newsroom, and an incredible experience. Do you still subscribe to physical newspapers and magazines?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until recently, I subscribed to five or six daily print newspapers and several magazines. I still get the <em>New York Times<\/em>, the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, the <em>New York Post<\/em>, and\u2014of course\u2014the <em>Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em> in print, and I subscribe to the print editions of the <em>Atlantic<\/em>, the <em>Economist<\/em>, and <em>Outside<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I still love print\u2014but more days than not, I find myself putting these beloved print editions straight into the recycling bin, because I\u2019ve already read most of the content online. So even as a journalist and a lover of print, I\u2019m consuming far less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>More days than not, I find myself putting these beloved print editions straight into the recycling bin, because I\u2019ve already read most of the content online.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>And lastly: are you of the same mindset about books? Do you prefer e-readers to hard copies?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I refuse to read books on the Kindle.<em> [He laughs.] <\/em>I love books and I love my bookshelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>So how do you jibe that with digital being the future of newspapers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re different use cases. I\u2019m a huge book person and a print magazine person; there\u2019s something to be said for a \u201clean-back\u201d magazine you engage with weekly or monthly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a record player, but that\u2019s another specific use case. I like vinyl for a reason, but I listen to a ton of music digitally. I don\u2019t have a VCR or a tape deck anymore.
