A detail-driven history tour of the beloved campus landmark\u2014from its Hogwarts-style great room to its (rumored) resident ghost<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Cornell\u2019s first expansion across Fall Creek Gorge: Risley Hall<\/a> opened in 1913 as a residence for women, built in a stately Tudor style within steps of the Thurston Avenue Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than a century later, the building still has the look of a castle, its gracefully curved driveway marked by slender brick pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of East Hill\u2019s most iconic dwellings, Risley has housed generations of students\u2014and for more than half a century, has served as Cornell\u2019s arts-themed program house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was named for its benefactor\u2019s mother-in-law!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n

Philanthropist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, widow of industrialist Russell Sage, enabled construction of the hall via a $300,000 gift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She named it in memory of her late husband\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Prudence Risley\u2019s portrait is prominently displayed in her eponymous hall, little is known about her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was born in Connecticut in 1778, married Elisha Sage Jr. at age 23, and had eight children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She died in 1865, one year after her husband.<\/p>\n<\/div>

It helped ensure University housing for women!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the years just before Risley opened, about 400 female students were enrolled at Cornell. But Sage College and Sage Cottage\u2014then the other women\u2019s dorms\u2014only had room for about half that number. The rest lived in small groups in off-campus houses, or locally with their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow to bring the \u2018outside\u2019 women, as they are called, into closer touch with the life of the University and give them a real share in its many activities, has indeed been a somewhat difficult problem,\u201d a 1911 report by the Advisor of Women noted, \u201cand will doubtless continue to be so, so long as any considerable proportion of them are scattered over the town in very small groups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1914, the addition of Risley\u2019s 150 rooms had brought the vast majority of enrolled women students into campus residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

No two rooms are exactly alike!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The building was designed by famed Ithaca-based architect William Henry Miller 1872, who had already created the A.D. White House, Uris Library and its McGraw Tower, Barnes Hall, and dozens of other projects on and off campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Risley, Miller created a floor plan that ensured that no two bedrooms would be the same; many rooms contained fireplaces, balconies, turrets, and small recesses known as embrasures\u2014in addition to dumbwaiter shafts and even secret stairwells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the hall first opened, the d\u00e9cor included artwork and numerous common-area furnishings donated by Cornell\u2019s first president, Andrew Dickson White.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It satisfied the president\u2019s yen for a \u2018Gothic castle\u2019!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having taken several trips to Oxford and Cambridge around the turn of the 20th century, A.D. White was inspired to build more residence halls at Cornell, particularly those in the English Collegiate-Gothic style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(His views had also been informed by the Gothic quads at Princeton and Penn, as Kermit Parsons, MRP \u201953, noted in his 1968 book The Cornell Campus: A History of its Planning and Development<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risley was modeled after the royal Hampton Court Palace<\/a> in Middlesex, England, built circa 1699\u2014though it was reportedly scaled back somewhat from early plans that were even grander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility, opened as the Risley Great Hall in 1913, was modeled as a scaled-down version of Oxford\u2019s famed Christ Church Refectory\u2014which also inspired the dining hall in the Harry Potter<\/em> films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s home to one of the University\u2019s legendary ghosts!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fondly known as \u201cAuntie Pru,\u201d the specter has long been reported to flit around the building\u2019s hallways and stairwells, flickering the lights and blowing cold drafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It was the genesis of North Campus!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Risley\u2019s site was being decided, University planners had begun looking at long-range facility needs\u2014and realized that the campus would have to expand beyond Cascadilla and Fall Creek gorges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its first decade and a half, Risley was the only building on North Campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A trustee gave Cornell $20,000 to purchase a five-acre parcel just north of Fall Creek Gorge, with Risley ultimately built on its north rim. That marked the first chapter of what would develop into the North Campus residential community over the following century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It was the University\u2019s first program house!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1970, Risley became home to the Prudence Risley Residential College for the Creative and Performing Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was immediately in demand: its first year, more than 1,000 students applied for fewer than 200 spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The co-ed, arts-themed hall remains Cornell\u2019s largest program house\u2014home to dancers, musicians, thespians, and myriad visual artists (though an arts-related major is not a prerequisite for residence there).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It features studios and a theater!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Risley houses an 80-seat, student-run black box theater and\u2014in a space fondly known as the \u201cdungeon\u201d\u2014there are a dozen artist workshops and studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They include a stained-glass shop; a multimedia studio; a recording studio; a print shop; wood, metal, and scene shops; music practice rooms; a darkroom; a video-editing studio; a sewing shop; and a pottery studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It has been home to notable alumni!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early residents include photographer Margaret Bourke-White 1927; Nobel Prize-winning scientist Barbara McClintock 1923, PhD 1927; and U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno \u201960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notable former \u201cRisleyites\u201d from its program house days have included actors Mia Korf \u201987 and Christopher Reeve \u201974; game designer Andrew Greenberg \u201979; writer Matt Ruff \u201987; and Olympic ice dancer Jamie Silverstein \u201907, BA \u201908.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It is a magnet for festivals!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Risley\u2019s Gothic lines and ample front lawn\u2014along with the artistic bent of its residents\u2014have made it the perfect setting for a plethora of themed events over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the \u201970s and \u201980s, it hosted dozens of Medieval feasts and festivals, Renaissance Fairs, and Oktoberfest celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It welcomes wee witches and wizards!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the early 2000s, Risley became home to a popular annual \u201cNight at Hogwarts,\u201d drawing both Cornell students and local Harry Potter fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has since become a more generic \u201cWizard\u2019s Feast\u201d\u2014though Quidditch matches and butterbeer remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It hosts arts events, from pop culture to classical!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another popular Risley tradition is its twice-annual screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em> in the Great Hall, with live accompaniment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other events include the Halloween-themed MasqueRave bash, a seasonal performance of Handel\u2019s Messiah<\/em>, and one-off programs like the Mozart opera Don Giovanni<\/em>, mounted in period costume in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And \u2026 its menu is famous\u2014for what it lacks!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2017, Risley\u2019s \u201call you care to eat\u201d dining hall was certified gluten-, peanut-, and tree nut-free. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The allergy-friendly options comprise a wide array of traditional hot entr\u00e9es along with a stir-fry station, a salad bar, a breakfast and fruit bar, and a dessert station that\u2019s a campus favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
