{"id":54894,"date":"2025-07-11T14:54:03","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T18:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=54894"},"modified":"2025-07-11T14:54:04","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T18:54:04","slug":"edingers-brewery-ardennes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/edingers-brewery-ardennes\/","title":{"rendered":"Couple\u2019s NY Brewery Focuses on Belgian Ales\u2014and Bulldog Tales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">With cans and bottles featuring their two Frenchies, the alums\u2019 libations are a hit with dog-lovers and beer fanciers alike<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When Derek Edinger \u201994, MEng \u201995, and Stacey Girard Edinger \u201995 adopted two French bulldogs in 2017 and named them Barley and Hops, the couple didn\u2019t realize just how prescient those monikers would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the adorable doggos are the beloved mascots for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breweryardennes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brewery Ardennes Taproom &amp; it\u2019s not all one kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many breweries focus on the strong, bitter IPAs, Stacey notes. \u201cAnd that can be intimidating to some people,\u201d she says. \u201cWe wanted to appeal to craft beverage consumers who might be looking for something different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We wanted to appeal to craft beverage consumers who might be looking for something different.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Stacey Girard Edinger \u201995<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach has paid off: in just its first few years, the brewery has received numerous accolades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 2023 New York International Beer Competition, its Grand Cru Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tripel won a gold medal; its Grand Cru Dubbel garnered silver; and its Speciale Belge won bronze. They felt like the two different beer styles we were shooting for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each label, therefore, prominently features a lively illustration of one the dogs\u2014with the other somewhere in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, Barley and Hops have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breweryardennes.com\/dogsofbreweryardennes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their own page<\/a> on the brewery\u2019s website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in August 2025, Ardennes will host its second annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breweryardennes.com\/happenings\/frenchiecon25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FrenchieCon<\/a>, featuring pet portraits, costume contests, a new beer release, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacey recalls with a laugh that early on, several marketing consultants and distributors dismissed the sales potential of the canine-centered designs. Her response: \u201cI disagree; it looks different than everything else on the shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quintessential Cornellian couple, Derek and Stacey not only met on the Hill but got engaged at Commencement: he proposed in front of the A.D.
