For two decades, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sarahspain.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sports journalist<\/a> has forged an award-winning career by combining the two, while paving the way for other women to thrive in her male-dominated industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arts &amp; Sciences alum hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1119-good-game-with-sarah-spai-185664375\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Good Game with Sarah Spain<\/em><\/a>, the first-ever daily podcast devoted to women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show features Spain\u2019s wide-ranging conversations with her guests\u2014on topics from life after pro soccer to the allure of a WNBA fantasy league. it\u2019s also available on Apple Podcasts (among other platforms), where it boasts a 4.6-star rating with hundreds of reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain has also spent more than 15 years working for ESPN as a writer, TV panelist, and radio and podcast host\u2014tackling topics both lighthearted (say, tips on how to beat the NFL\u2019s bag policy) and serious (the obsession with female athletes\u2019 attire).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do too much mythologizing in sport,\u201d she observed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/story\/_\/id\/28586207\/now-right-remember-kobe-bryant-life-all-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 essay<\/a> for ESPN, reflecting on the death of NBA star Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash a few days earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAthletes are invincible, games are war, wins are moral currency, and the greatest among us are gods who will never be forgotten. But life is not made up of simply heroes and villains, good and evil. Sometimes\u2014often\u2014people can be both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:0px\"><blockquote><p>Spain has spent more than 15 years working for ESPN as a writer, TV panelist, and radio and podcast host.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Chicago native, Spain majored in English on the Hill and was captain of the track and field team. While sports journalism may seem like a natural career path for her in hindsight, she says it never crossed her mind until her mid-20s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She moved to L.A. after graduation to pursue a career in comedy; her success at a football-related assignment in an acting class prompted the teacher to ask if she had any interest in working as a sports broadcaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018No\u2014there are hardly any women, and the ones I see are all supermodels,\u2019\u201d Spain recalls. \u201cI wanted to be snarky and funny and opinionated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after taking a course on TV sports reporting at UCLA, she fell in love with the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her first job was at Fox Sports\u2014where she was tasked with selecting and writing about game plays for highlights segments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She covered sports for local outlets in Chicago before landing at ESPN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Spain\u2019s rise in a male-dominated field hasn\u2019t come without a few curveballs\u2014from battles over locker-room access to criticism for her clothing choices to snide, sexualizing remarks about how she\u2019d get scoops.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" throw.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like I wasn\u2019t doing anything wrong, and I was still being prevented from doing my job,\u201d recalls Spain. \u201cYou have to be so good, and do such good work, that they can\u2019t say no to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many women in fields from sports journalism to video gaming, Spain\u2014who now has more than 250,000 followers on X\/Twitter\u2014has been frequently targeted by online trolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, to draw attention to the harassment she and colleagues endured, she co-produced a Peabody Award-winning video titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9tU-D-m2JY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>#MoreThanMean<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video, which has since amassed nearly 5 million views on YouTube, Spain and another female journalist listen as men (volunteers, not the actual trolls) read aloud some of the messages the women had received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> You have to be so good, and do such good work, that they can\u2019t say no to you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They range from the merely annoying (\u201cSarah Spain sounds like a nagging wife\u201d) to the utterly horrible (\u201cI hope your boyfriend beats you\u201d; \u201cI hope your dog gets hit by a car\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while Spain says the trolling has hardly lessened nearly a decade later, at least these days there are more women in her field to support each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWomen can have every job now: owner, general manager, sideline reporter,\u201d she says. \u201cI always say the ceiling is higher than ever\u2014but the basement is the same.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2025, Spain published her first book, a collaboration with former pro football player turned coach Deland McCullough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Titled <em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Runs-in-the-Family\/Sarah-Spain\/9781668036280\">Runs in the Family<\/a>: An Incredible True Story of Football, Fatherhood, and Belonging<\/em>, it details how McCullough\u2019s life was upended after his adoption records were unsealed and he learned about his birth parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"755\" class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cEven non-sports fans will love this incredible story,\u201d says a review in <em>Booklist<\/em>, calling it \u201ca book about trauma, family, and hope, threaded with moments of profound sadness and unbelievable joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spain had originally reported on McCullough\u2019s dramatic personal history for ESPN in 2018, winning Sports Emmys in two categories for her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had to earn his family\u2019s trust, and prove to them that I could bring real care and empathy to their story,\u201d she says of the book project. \u201cIt was important to me that I provide context and nuance, to make each person multifaceted\u2014so that if somebody may come across as a villain, there are still reasons for how they might have ended up that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her own days as an athlete for the Big Red, Spain specialized in the heptathlon, which combines seven events\u2014100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter sprint, long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter run\u2014over two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she has long liked to joke, the event is an apt metaphor for her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the \u2018jack-of-all-trades, master of none,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI needed to do all seven things\u2014and that\u2019s
