at the Door of Cornell\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A new book explores how the Ithaca \u2018suburb\u2019 of Cayuga Heights was born, a half-century after the University&#8217;s founding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Corey Ryan Earle \u201907<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In 1922, Jared Treman Newman 1875 described \u201cthe plateau on the north side of Fall Creek\u201d as a \u201cspacious area right at the door of Cornell.\u201d Newman would go on to co-develop what became the Village of Cayuga Heights\u2014the only village within the Town of Ithaca and the only incorporated faculty enclave in a New York State college town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a new book<em>,<\/em> longtime resident Bea Szekely\u2014the village\u2019s historian, a Big Red parent, and former director of Cornell&#8217;s study abroad program\u2014chronicles Cayuga Heights&#8217; origins and its many connections to the University.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehistorycenter.net\/thehistoryshop\/p\/university-suburb-founding-the-village-of-cayuga-heights-in-ithaca-new-york\"><em>University Suburb<\/em><\/a><em>: Founding the Village of Cayuga Heights in Ithaca, New York<\/em>\u2014is drawn from a phrase that first appeared in the <em>Daily Sun<\/em> in 1922, signifying the village\u2019s proximity to Cornell and its beginnings as a faculty enclave developed to accommodate the growing number of professors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps best known for its stately homes\u2014many belonging to distinguished University leaders and scholars over the years\u2014the small community has a history that is inextricably tied to its academic neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marcham Hall is home to the village clerk, CHPD, and other municipal offices.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the village hall itself was built as the home for Ezra Cornell\u2019s granddaughter, and now bears the name of former village mayor and eminent professor of history, Frederick Marcham, PhD 1926.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book developed in part from the Cayuga Heights History Project, launched to celebrate the village\u2019s centennial in 2015\u2014the same year as Cornell\u2019s own sesquicentennial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To document Cayuga Heights\u2019 people and places, Szekely and her collaborators (including alum and village resident Carole Schiffman \u201983), developed a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cayugaheightshistory.org\/\">website on the village\u2019s history<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Painstakingly researched using records from Cornell\u2019s Rare and Manuscript Collections and the History Center in Tompkins County, Szekely\u2019s <em>University Suburb <\/em>offers something for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For aficionados of Big Red lore<\/strong>, the story of Cayuga Heights is the story of Cornell during a period of significant growth at the significant growth at the turn of the 20th century.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 19th century, unofficial policy saw faculty living on campus, and students off campus. But from 1900\u201310, both groups nearly doubled in size, and the residential system reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University began building men\u2019s dormitories for the first time, and faculty began to seek convenient housing within walking distance to campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the faculty cottages that once lined Feeney Way (formerly East Avenue) and Ho Plaza (formerly Central Avenue), only the <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A.D. A 1925 village directory identifies 100 Cayuga Heights \u201chouseholders\u201d\u201485 of whom were Cornell-affiliated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For fans of urban planning, design, and architecture<\/strong>, <em>University Suburb <\/em>touches on all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cayuga Heights was one of several \u201cheights\u201d real estate developments, along with Cornell Heights (directly north of Fall Creek Gorge) and Renwick Heights (sloping down toward Ithaca High from the plateau). Cayuga Heights is the only one that became a separate municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>A key figure in opening the area for development was businessman Edward Wyckoff 1889.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wyckoff inherited his father\u2019s interests in the Remington typewriter company and began purchasing farmland across Fall Creek Gorge. The following year, Blood lost reelection as county judge. Neither sought public office again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book\u2019s epitaph is a quote from Ezra Cornell\u2019s son Franklin, who recognized the area\u2019s potential long before the village\u2019s
