{"id":5326,"date":"2022-01-20T10:48:35","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T15:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=5326"},"modified":"2022-01-20T11:43:02","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T16:43:02","slug":"nordgren-parks-after-dark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/nordgren-parks-after-dark\/","title":{"rendered":"Alum Is an Evangelist for the Wonders of National Parks\u2014\u2018After Dark\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size rkv-gutter-bottom-triple\">Astronomer and artist Tyler Nordgren, PhD \u201997, trains rangers to lead stargazing programs and immortalizes parks in 1930s-style travel posters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cHalf the park is after dark.\u201d Astronomer and artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tylernordgren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Nordgren, PhD \u201997<\/a>, coined that neatly rhyming catchphrase to promote his passion project: raising awareness about the nighttime allure of America\u2019s national parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While millions worldwide have enjoyed the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, Denali, Everglades, Death Valley, and other U.S. treasures during the day, Nordgren aims to spread the word about the wonders that emerge after the sun goes down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not just stargazing,\u201d says Nordgren. \u201cIt&#8217;s nocturnal species. It&#8217;s the landscape. It&#8217;s the beauty of the moon, going on moonlight hikes. And as he explains, national parks\u2014which inherently lack major commercial or residential development\u2014offer rare respites from the light pollution that bedevils amateur stargazers and professional astronomers alike. And it\u2019s getting worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunities have been converting their streetlights from 1950s halogen bulbs to LEDs, which are much more energy efficient, so you can get a lot more light for the same amount of electricity,\u201d Nordgren notes. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing this all around the country\u2014and in fact, cities all over the world have become much brighter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past decade and a half, Nordgren has been using both his scientific acumen and his artistic skills to further his mission. While on the faculty at California\u2019s University of Redlands, he spent a 2007 sabbatical with the National Park Service, visiting more than a dozen parks and training rangers to conduct night sky programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Cities all over the world have become much brighter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the things that really struck me was that in places like Arches National Park, the photographers would be shoulder to shoulder right before sunset,\u201d he recalls. \u201cAnd the minute the sun went down, they&#8217;d all go away\u2014but that&#8217;s when the Milky Way and the stars come out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>A stellar twist on the \u2018artist in residence\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although COVID-19 has disrupted Nordgren\u2019s ongoing work training park rangers, last summer he was chosen to serve as the Grand Canyon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandcanyon.org\/our-work\/astronomer-in-residence\/tyler-nordgren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first-ever astronomer-in-residence<\/a>, offering educational programs to some of the many visitors who\u2019ve been flocking to national parks during the pandemic for socially distanced vacations. While it was a one-time appointment, he\u2019s aiming to follow it up with similar gigs at other parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"718\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1-718x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;Stars Above, Earth Below&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-5324 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1-718x1024.jpg 718w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1-768x1095.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1-1077x1536.jpg 1077w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/Nordgren-Book-Cover-1.jpg 1108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><figcaption>Nordgren penned a guide to stargazing in the parks.<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>A fan of outdoor pursuits since his childhood in Oregon and Alaska, Nordgren earned an undergrad degree in physics from Reed College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He spent the summer before his senior year as an intern on the Hill\u2014conducting research on pulsars under <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2019\/12\/yervant-terzian-who-explored-matter-between-stars-dies-80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the late Yervant Terzian<\/a>, then chairman of astronomy, who encouraged him to apply to Cornell for grad school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nordgren\u2019s doctoral research brought him to such legendary facilities as Australia\u2019s Parkes Observatory, New Mexico\u2019s Very Large Array, and Puerto Rico\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=301674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now-decommissioned Arecibo Observatory<\/a>, then administered by Cornell. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The many weekends he spent hiking in the mountains and desert near Flagstaff, Arizona, during his time as a postdoc with the U.S. Naval Observatory was\u2014unbeknownst to him\u2014perfect training for his eventual residency at the Grand Canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>A nod to vintage travel posters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to his astronomy research and teaching, Nordgren has long been an artist; When he got home after viewing it, some 2,000 orders had piled up\u2014and they kept pouring in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt took me weeks to fill them,\u201d he says. \u201cThank goodness I was a professor and it was summer vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He decided to retire early from academia and pursue his art full time; he and his wife (fellow astronomy alum Julie Rathbun, PhD \u201900) relocated back to Ithaca, where he runs his poster operation from home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, he\u2019s been working on a series showcasing how another Depression-era program, the Civilian Conservation Corps, enabled the improvement of such New York State parks as Buttermilk Falls, Treman, Watkins Glen, Taughannock Falls, and Fillmore Glen, with more designs to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBack in the 1930s, that program built the trails, bridges, gazebos, and pavilions that we all love,\u201d Nordgren says. \u201cThe idea is to highlight what the CCC did, that we&#8217;ve been enjoying for 100 years\u2014and maybe, that will help build the case for a new program to last us another 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top image: Nordgren watches the Milky Way rise at Big Bend National Park.<\/em> <em>(Photo provided)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Published January 20, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Astronomer and artist Tyler Nordgren, PhD \u201997, trains rangers to lead stargazing programs and immortalizes parks in 1930s-style travel posters<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":5323,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"alumni_hub_syml_posts":[],"footnotes":""},"categories":[229],"tags":[],"cornell_year_post":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-5326","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alumni"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
