A Tale of Two Cornells: How Jonathan Brand, JD \u201996, went from \u2018the Hill\u2019 to \u2018the Hilltop,\u2019 far above Iowa\u2019s river valleys<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each May, Jonathan Brand, JD \u201996, dons academic regalia\u2014including a carnelian red robe\u2014to preside over the graduation ceremonies for his proud Cornell students in \u2026 Mt. Vernon, IA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, the above isn\u2019t the mangled text of an AI-generated story: Brand is president of Cornell College<\/a>, a 1,000-student liberal arts school in the eastern end of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, he\u2019s also a law alum of the \u201cother\u201d Cornell\u2014the one on the Hill in Ithaca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brand pays tribute to both at his college\u2019s commencement events, where he wears his Cornell Law School robe\u2014and a pair of Chuck Taylors in Cornell College\u2019s signature royal purple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if there\u2019s one thing Brand wants his fellow alums to know, it\u2019s this: their small Midwestern doppelg\u00e4nger had the name first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1853 as a Methodist seminary, the institution was named Cornell College two years later\u2014a decade before Cornell University\u2019s charter was drafted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, notably, the college isn\u2019t named for our Ezra, but for an apparent fifth cousin: William Wesley Cornell (1823\u201370), an NYC industrialist, philanthropist, and ironworks magnate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name confusion caused brief friction back in 1870, when a pastor at Cornell College wrote to Ezra \u201cconcerning college matters\u201d\u2014soliciting a donation in exchange for renaming the smaller school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pastor noted that the Iowa college was \u201cprospering grandly \u2026 is happily named, and has a fine reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Noting the \u201centanglement\u201d of names, however, he suggested Cornell College would consider changing its moniker \u201cfor a consideration, in the shape of a donation or scholarship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing back just over a week later\u2014and pointedly replying on the back of the pastor\u2019s letter\u2014Ezra huffily dismissed the request, throwing some 19th-century shade in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I founded the Cornell University at Ithaca I had not heard of the existence of the \u2018Cornell College\u2019 in Iowa,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no fear that the latter will ever be mistaken for Cornell University, and cannot consent that its reputation shall be tarnished \u2018for a consideration,\u2019 or the laurels of its founder purchased with my money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, any confusion between the two Cornells is far more lighthearted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe like to have a little fun with this,\u201d Brand admits with a chuckle. \u201cIt\u2019s a point of interesting distinction for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the college\u2019s first webpages took that approach and ran with it: titled \u201cWe\u2019re Not in Ithaca<\/a>,\u201d it offers a list of tongue-in-cheek comparisons between the college and the \u201cother\u201d Cornell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It notes, for example, that Cornell College holds two national wrestling team titles\u2014while the University has none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also: \u201cWinters in Ithaca are snowy and cold,\u201d while \u201cwinters in Mount Vernon, on the other hand, are \u2026 cold and snowy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University is fondly known as \u201cthe Hill,\u201d the college as \u201cthe Hilltop.\u201d The Big Red has Touchdown the Bear; the college has a ram named Ulysses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At number 96 on the Daily Sun<\/em>\u2019s 2015 edition of the \u201c161 Things Every Cornell Student Should Do\u201d list is this: \u201cStrut around campus wearing a Cornell sweatshirt\u2014from Iowa\u2019s Cornell College.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a popular T-shirt at Cornell College also taps its hometown\u2019s potential confusion with George Washington\u2019s estate, declaring: \u201cMt. Vernon: (no, the other one); Home of Cornell! (no, the other one).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, there have been apocryphal tales of students who confused the two Cornells\u2014applying sight unseen to one, being admitted, and mistakenly matriculating at the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least one of those stories is somewhat true: as the Daily Sun<\/em> reported in 2018, one young man accidentally applied<\/a> to Cornell College instead of the University; once accepted, he realized his mistake and gamely headed off to Mt. Vernon, but ultimately had no regrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, it does happen,\u201d Brand says. \u201cIt\u2019s more than just lore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally, there are mix-ups with snail mail; Brand recalls the time he got an envelope for then-President Martha Pollack, addressed to Day Hall at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will see that someone completely mangled your work address, and I just had to share\u2014priceless,\u201d Brand wrote to Pollack in an email, signing it \u201cfrom my Cornell to yours (and also mine).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how did Brand end up going from Cornell (University) alum to Cornell (College) president?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grew up in New Jersey and in St. Louis, MO, and earned a BA in history and French and a master\u2019s in French literature from the University of Michigan before heading to the Hill for his JD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of his mentors there was the Law School\u2019s dean, Russell Osgood, who left a few years later to become president of Iowa\u2019s Grinnell College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brand later served in senior roles at Grinnell under Osgood before assuming the presidency of Doane University in Nebraska in 2005, then taking the helm at Cornell College in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a few other crossovers from the Hill to the Hilltop\u2014including history professor Phil Lucas, PhD \u201983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
